In Islam it is permissible for Muslim men (not women) to marry women from the people of the book.

Thanks, I didn't know there is a difference between sexes for permissibility to marry across faiths. Now if men (like Dr Oz or Shahid Khan) marry non-Muslim women who do not convert, then are the men automatically considered apostates? I have seen lot of them here in U.S.

No a Muslim man can marry woman who are people of the book (Christians and Jews) and the woman do not have to convert. This is the overwhelming majority position.

Please note that marrying a convert like IK did with Jemima is not controversial at all. All who find it controversial should go jump off a bridge.

Btw, you don’t become an apostate in Islam because of a wrong deed that you do. You become a sinner. You can only become an apostate if you deny the Prophet or Allah or what is written in the Quran.

On the basis of being in a constant state of kufr, whereas with other sins you commit them momentarily. However while being married to a mushrik (for men) and non-Muslim (for women), your whole life at all times revolves around being in contravention of Allah's clear commands in Quran.
