Potential Investment Opportunities Tourism

Nature has gifted Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with rich cultural and tourism friendly environment. It has the potential of becoming a big tourist attraction in the world, due to its scenic beauty, geographical location, climate and natural resources. The ecology, topolography and conspicuous geography of the province would have been few parallels on our planet. Indeed, the province has three distinct divisions/strata, i.e. the Northern region which is mountainous containing lush green valleys and natural sanctuaries for eco as well as green tourism. The mid part of the province generally called Peshawar valley has had been the seat and nursery for different civilizations. The southern part of the province is mountainous and gravelly containing a few alluvial plains full of natural resources besides effluents.

Though Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) and the Sarhad Tourism Corporation (STC) have provided some infrastructure for the development of tourism in the area, however; it still lacks modern tourism facilities like parks, hotels, restaurants and roads in these areas. The Sarhad Tourism Corporation is also making efforts to strengthen the modern vision of public -private partnership and offer the following important sites to private sector for development:

1. National Park and Tourism Facilities at Mahudand Swat

The marvelous lake Mahudand is situated at a distance of 35km from Kalam (Swat). Beside its scenic beauty, the tourists usually go to enjoy trout fishing in the lake of Mahudand. The lake which is like a rough diamond could further be made attractive if sufficient facilities like that of restaurant, lodging suites, cafes, snack bars and emergency medical center are provided to the area. Approximate investment in Mahudand is estimated to be Rs. 100 Million.

2. Construction of 10 (Ten) Tourism Facilitation Centers in the Province

Due to moderate weather and spectacular beauty of northern part, NWFP is frequently visited by a huge number of tourists. The foreigners as well as local tourists always demand some road side facilities for their short stay and refreshment. To facilitate the tourists particularly their families, STC intends to establish a network of tourism facilitation centers on the main highways of the province as under:

i. Indus Highway, D.l.Khan.
ii. Indus Highway, Karak District.
iii. Peshawar City.
iv. GT Road, Kund Car Parking.
v. Silk Road, Hawallian (Abbottabad).
vi. Jabba Sheep Farm, Mansehra.
vii. Silk Road, Battagram District.
viii. Galyat, Abbottabad.
ix. Chakdara (Dir).
x. Drosh (Chiral)

(Approximate cost on each facility is Rs. 20 million.)

3. Kund Park

Kund Park is situated on the confluence of river Kabul & Indus on the main G.T Road (Peshawar - Islamabad) near Attock bridge. Due to its unique location the park has become a recreation spot for the people of Peshawar Islamabad, Nowshera, Attock, Mardan and Swabi etc.

The following facilities will add the beauty of the park:

i. Bridge on River Kabul

A bridge on river Kabul will give direct access to the park from main G.T Road near village Kund.

ii. Tourists Hostel at Kund Park

At present, the tourists usually plan day trip to kund Park. Hence lodging facilities for the tourists at Kund Park is earnestly required. For this purpose two hostels one each on river Kabul and river Indus is required. Estimated cost of the two hostels is Rs. 100 million.

iii. Construction of Restaurants in Kund Park

Restaurant is the basic need to entertain visitors in the park. Two restaurants with all modern facilities are very essential to be established in the park. i.e. one on river Kabul and another on Indus side. The estimated cost on the construction of two restaurants with full modern facilities is Rs. 100 million.

iv. Children Park in Kund Park

As visitors are usually accompanied by their families; therefore, Children Park in the Kund Park will add the beauty of the park. A separate enclosure with in the park for children recreation is estimated to be constructed at the cost of Rs. 50 million.

v. Boating & Canoeing facility in Kund Park

Rivers and boats go together. Visitors always like to sail through the river Kabul & Indus water. For this Kund Park offers a bright opportunity because it is an ideal place for boating. This facility will require funds to the tune of Rs. 50 million.

4. Development of Thandiani Summer Resort (Abbottabad)

Thandiani is situated near Abbottabad about 24 km at an altitude of 8,832 feet. Thandiani is a tiny, unspoiled hill station on the flat top of a conical hill with views in all directions. The road to Thandiani is in good condition and remained open most of the year. To develop Thandiani, it is proposed to establish a hotel and a Play Land in this area, which will pave way for more tourist activities and indeed this would prove to be exceptionally lucrative. This facility will require funds to the tune of Rs. 1000 million for diverse activities including walking track between Thandiani and Nathiagali.

5. Chair Lifts

i. Installation of Chair Lifts between Naran and lake Saifulmalook (Manshera), Estimated Cost Rs.120 million ii. Chair Lifts Scheme at Dobanda - Zakhana, Dir (upper) Estimated Cost Rs. 120 million iii. Chair Lifts on River Kabul at Kund (Nowshera). Total Length 200 meter. Estimated Cost Rs. 100 million. Potential Investment Opportunities in Hydel Sector in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa of Pakistan is blessed with enormous hydropower potential. This Potential remained focus of interest to private investors and international funding agencies. Most of the hydel projects of Pakistan including Tarbela and Warsak, are located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. There is a potential of 27000 MW electricity generation from hydropower alone from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa out of 40000 MW available in the Pakistan. Sarhad Hydel Development Organization (SHYDO), since its inception in 1986, has been instrumental in identifying and exploiting hydel potential in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. SHYDO is an autonomous body of Govt. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa responsible for hydel development in province. The organization is under the administrative control of Irrigation and Power Department of Provincial Government and is governed by the Board of Directors.

SHYDO has so far identified a number of promising hydel potential sites and financial phasing for HPPs (F/Study & Construction) is appended herewith.
