BBC News - Pakistan Taliban commander 'seized in US operation'

US forces have captured a senior Pakistan Taliban commander, Latif Mehsud, in a military operation, the state department has confirmed.

Spokeswoman Marie Harf described Latif Mehsud as a "terrorist leader" and a "senior commander" in the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.

She gave no details of the operation.

She said he was a close confidante of the group's leader, Hakimullah Mehsud, who this week gave a rare interview to the BBC about possible peace talks.

Ms Harf said the Pakistan Taliban (TTP) were held responsible for the attempted bombing of Times Square in 2010, as well as attacks on US diplomats in Pakistan and many Pakistani civilians.

The group "had also vowed to attack the US homeland again," Ms Harf said.

An Afghan provincial official earlier told Associated Press news agency that Latif Mehsud was arrested as he was driving on a highway in Afghanistan's eastern Logar province.

The arrest took place about a week ago, the official said.

Latif Mehsud was reportedly returning from a meeting to discuss swapping prisoners.

The Washington Post said that US forces had taken him from Afghan intelligence agents who were trying to recruit him as a go-between for peace talks.

A spokesman for President Hamid Karzai, Aimal Faizi, told the Post: "The Americans forcibly removed him and took him to Bagram."

Mr Faizi said Latif Mehsud had only agreed to meet Afghan operatives after months of negotiations.

Some reports say Mr Karzai, who is currently holding talks with visiting US Secretary of State John Kerry, was furious about the US operation.

PM's pledge

This week, Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud told the BBC he was open to "serious talks" with Pakistan's government but said he had not yet been approached.

Latif and Hakimullah Mehsud are not thought to be related.

In a rare interview, Hakimullah denied carrying out recent deadly attacks in public places but said he would continue to target "America and its friends".

The chief loosely controls more than 30 militant groups in Pakistan's tribal areas.

After being elected PM in May, Nawaz Sharif announced he would open unconditional talks with the Taliban.

The group has killed thousands of people in its war against the Pakistani state in recent years.

They control areas in the north-west and have been blamed for a wave of suicide bombings and other attacks.

Along with Pakistan, the Afghan government has also made overtures for peace with the Taliban. A number of Taliban prisoners have been freed to smooth the process.

US attempts in June to talk to the Taliban, including the opening of a now-shut Taliban office in Qatar, infuriated Mr Karzai.

TTP head fazlullah wasn't killed by US, he was killed by afghan talibans

the reality is afghanistan taliban has been fooled to support the american backed TTP in the past, and now afghan taliban has trying to disassociate from these TTP scum

it was US which kept protecting fazlullah till few days ago he was killed by talibans

This clearly shows Karzaai double game. At one side he supports TTP through NDS and at other he support Baloch insurgents through his indian friends. Such a snake living in our backyard and then they have audacity to blame all their problems on us!

I wonder if entire TTP leadership is based at Afghanistan. Maulvi faqeer and Latif mehsud both caught in Afghanistan. Mullah radio in Afghanistan.

You meant Snake , I presume.

The question arises what was Karzai's agents doing with Latif Mehsud who happens to be Number tow in TTP after Hakimullah Mehsud ? Karzia is a SNAKE causing all this terrorism in Pakistan. We should take this Bast@*d out.

We should take this Bast@*d out. Pakistan should demand that the US turn this lowlife over to Pakistan for questioning.

Yes he meant snake, by the way quite an interesting line that u highlighted u could have also pointed out the fact about Karzai, but then that dont suite ur agendas either now does it.

The entire game plan is to give us maximum collateral damage, remember there is a huge difference of strategy of dealing with a nuclear state and an oil rich state which does not have nuclear technology.
A strategic hegemony player such as United States is well aware of how to tackle with countries according to their capabilities,so best way to weaken us is to:

-Reduce our pro-Pakistani lobby system in Afghanistan.
-Eliminate difference between Afghan Taliban and TTP,remember both organizations have different objectives and targets.
-Reduce Pakistani power and pressure on Indian side, deviate us and weaken our security.
-Keeping an eye on China as well.

We are the actual target of American regime not Afghanistan, which is the center of 'Proxy wars' from past till now.Their strategies are changed not goal, seeing US past record,I am so not confused,in fact I am enjoying to explore their mentality and game plan, let us see, what happens next...The Taliban which we have raised together against Russians are becoming so monstrous and difficult to target that situation is getting out of our and US hands.
All Pakistan needs is to seal border,NATO supply, get out of US planned war and wage full fledged operation against TTP only, using any tactics either settlement for temporary period of time or destroying them one by one by selective operations.

Noone can protect these scum anymore. The downfall of the TTP is on the way. Puppet masters can only try to protect their puppets.

So are we saying that Latif Mehsud is arrested for his own security because Afghan Taliban were hunting him?

This is a chess match gents.

Totally agree.... some thing fishy is going on.

The way suddenly, TTP has started to cripple! My take...... 'hunt the hunter' game is ON, all the useful idiots are going to disappear soon.

Circumstantial Facts / Events happening in parallel:
- Political forces are being approached and guided for owning TTP, by virtue of deals.
- After 5 years, so called Afghan Taliban, have become alive from dead and have penetrated the inner circles of invincible TTP!!!!
- US is planning to leave Afghanistan, first in 2013 and now in 2014
- Pakistan is getting new army chief and new CJ.
- Afghan diplomats are getting friendly with new govt. of Pakistan!

Did i miss any thing?

maybe you missed new anti terror laws and GOP seriousness in upgrading training of Police and establishing force specialized for COIN and anti terror Ops and new air era at least in KPK police.
I have high hopes for new anti terror laws.:raise:

This is very dubious indeed and lends massive weight to Pakistan's accusations that Afghan intelligence do indeed have links to the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) and the Swat Taliban faction.

The Americans seizing this man is an interesting development. It could be one of either two things. The first that the US did not want Afghan intelligence officers going about their own operations without consulting the US. The other that these men pose a grave danger to Pakistan and that the US is seeking to rid the region of such people, particularly after the Pakistanis have released many high profile Afghan Taliban suspects, with US consent.

I'm surprised to see the reaction of Karzai and his people. I thought terrorists were terrorists....
