Islamabad: Expressing dissatisfaction with the government’s strategy to counter coronavirus, Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Monday directed the federal government to remove Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Health Zafar Mirza from his post.

The direction came during a suo motu hearing by a five-member bench headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmad.

Attorney general of Pakistan Khalid Jawed Khan on this occasion requested the chief justice not to give such directions as it will badly affect war against coronavirus which was in a crucial phase, Doing so will be disastrous, he further said.

“Do not change him mid-flight,” the attorney general requested the court saying the matter should be left to the federal government’s discretion.

The court had earlier remarked that the government had no plan to tackle the virus despite the fact there was an army of ministers and advisers. “What have you done so far except inducting the allegedly corrupt people in the cabinet,” remarked the court.

The attorney general requested the court not to call him (Zafar Mirza) corrupt or incompetent, to which the court said it had only used the word ‘allegedly’ corrupt.

Justice Gulzar also referred to FIA investigation against PM’s aide on health for ordering export of face masks worth Rs20 million (Dh441,756) when they were acutely required at home.

On Friday, the top court in a suo motu case had sent a notice to Attorney General of Pakistan, Health Secretary Dr Tanveer Ahmad Qureshi and Interior Secretary Yousaf Naseem Khokhar, questioning “inadequate health facilities to battle the epidemic.”

In its response, the government informed the apex court of the measures it had taken to combat the virus. However, during the hearing on Monday, Chief Justice Gulzar declared that the government “had not done anything” at this point.
