Summary:

Micro-satellite development at University environment provides hands-on experience of building a satellite from design through launch and orbit operations for students in a cost effective way. Since multi-disciplinary efforts are required for satellite program are normally available in Universities therefore this kind of projects coupled with team building would provide valuable contribution to aerospace field. It would not only involve training scientists and engineers for the future but it can also used as a tool for development of new technologies using research culture of university environment for future system.

Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), the national space agency has taken an initiative in the form of "Pakistan National Student Satellite Program (PNSSP)", envisioning a long-term program to involve, train and prepare university students for the high-tech space industry. The proposed program is a way forward for sustainable and progressive student satellite developments under the umbrella of SUPARCO. Sir Syed University of engineering and Technology, Pakistan has taken initiative to join hand with SUPARCO for first student satellite program. The development of attitude determination and control, and power sub systems will be carried out at Electronic Engineering Department with review and funding support from SUPARCO. The project will be implemented through involvement of students, research scholars and faculty members. The proposed design of satellite is a 50 kg class Micro Satellite, measuring 50cm by 50cm by 50cm, with an average power of ~50 W and design life of 1-2 years, to be launched in a low earth orbit (LEO) at ~500 km altitude, carrying Store forward, earth μCAM, and scientific experiments payload.

This talk will describe the system design concept, science mission, common subsystem description, and major challenges for development of student satellite.
New developments:

Suparco Projects:

-PRSS-1: China building and launching in 2016

IST and University level projects:

Moot on aerospace science and engineering starts - thenews.com.pk

-ICUBE2: IST has embarked on planning larger 2U Cubesat ‘ICUBE-2’ with larger payload capacity and advanced attitude control system for more sophisticated applications. It will indeed open up a large vista of experiments and research that could be conducted in space, by all the students, scientists and engineers of our universities and R & D organisations. ~2Kg Cubesat

-Susat-1 (Student Satellite -1) Pakistan multi-university Project: Remote sensing and communication. Program officially launched Oct 2013. ~The proposed design of satellite is a 50 kg class Micro Satellite, measuring 50cm by 50cm by 50cm, with an average power of ~50 W and design life of 1-2 years, to be launched in a low earth orbit (LEO) at ~500 km altitude, carrying Store forward, earth μCAM, and scientific experiments payload.
Student satellite programme launched - thenews.com.pk

Joint-country projects:

-APSCO Sat-6: IST is also actively participating in the progress of Asia Pacific Space Cooperation Organisation (APSCO). We have been selected as a lead university for APSCO Sat-6, which is a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Remote Sensing Satellite with Inter Satellite Links capability. The initial feasibility study of the project has been completed and project approval is awaited. IST will invite other Pakistani universities and sister organizations to participate in this prestigious satellite project.

-IST will also be working with China on Beihang University’s three satellite constellation in the Low Earth Orbit aimed at accurate Space Environment Measurement and Research.

It makes sense that Pakistan, with it's very low funding for a space program, is now concentrating on small low cost missions and International collaboration which shares and lowers the cost with partner countries.

At the Highest level Pakistan is collaborating with China on Communication and Remote Sensing Satellites (both Electro-Optical and SAR). PAKSAT-IR has been launched and PRSS is due 2017. I would expect the SAR satellite to follow a few years later, followed by another Comm satellite.

At the National level it is difficult to see what Suparco is doing as these programs are classified.

At the sub-national & International level Pakistan is working with APSCO on APSCO-Sat 6, which might be similar to the Susat-1 program (maybe they will be merged or one will be cut to avoid duplication?) and IST is working with a Chinese University.

At the University and Research level, ICUBE-1 has been launched by IST and ICUBE-2 is being planned. Other universities will work with Suparco on the Susat-1 program (50kg Micro Satellite).

Any idea when Pakistan will be launching its satellite from its OWN soil ....??

Any idea when Pakistan will be launching its satellite from its OWN soil ....??
its not difficult to make a slv when you have a good missile devlopment program, infact you should ask why pakistan is not launching satellites on its own?

I asked the same thing... freakin PMLN.. instead of wasting money on so called youth program must invest in this sector...

When our politicians will be willing to do it and stop wasting money on ****** programs which have no outcome.

In 1962 , Pakistan was the first Nation to launch a space bound rocket with Payload so we were number one in 1962. We can take some pride in that

And it was launched from Pakistani Soil. "Rehbr 1" Missions

That Rocket was retired

Well at present Pakistan do not have a space launch vehicle since that time

I reviewed the Missiles we have and these do not have the range nor capacity to carry large payloads.

a) Likely we are looking at investment to create the Space Launch Vehicle
b) The platform will have to get tested (in case its brand new)
c) We could attain a platform via Transfer of Technology from China but that has to get purchased
d) Secondly we would need to develop Human Resources in the Space Technology Sector for 10 years
e) After the 10-12 years wait we could perhaps launch a proper space payload

We have some Missiles they just are not large enough in my opinion to go out of earth's orbit

We need a Rocket , that is larger then Shaheen 2 , and is 3 stage system
for a proper Solution to put something in orbit

The Shaheen 2 platform is very large as you can see in the first image
perhaps a rocket that is 10% larger with booster rockets is enough to create Pakistan's own Space Rocket , we might already have the needed technology

In form of Shaheen 3

Shaheen 2 appears to be 17-18 Meter , we just need to boost up the size to
25 meters , and add few smaller booster rockets on side , so instead of 2 stage it becomes three stage vehicle

Shaheen three would enable Pakistan to routinely send Satellites into Earth's orbit or Space Ambitions

Good thread.

The Rehbar sounding rocket program was built around the U.S Nike-Cajun/Apache rockets carrying sodium vapor and grenade experiments to measure the wind velocities and wind shears in the upper atmosphere. The 5-member team responsible for this pioneering program was led by Tariq Mustafa and included Salim Mehmud and Sikander Zaman both of whom later became Chairmen of SUPARCO.

The Economic benefit from the ability to send out own Sattelites would be great if we develop Shaheen 3 , as a Spac Sattelite Launch Vehicle platform.

Our own sattelites , better telecommunication and ability to not have blackouts due to internet outages etc , growth in telecommunication sector , and better services, more eCommerce , more internet access to remote Areas. GPS services , and alternative services

Military and Civilian implictions

Ditigal services for consumers , the possibilities ar endless , weather tracking etc

University and PHD development programs that use these Local Sattelites for research and developing new scientist

Government will give 200 million to people take loan and buy taxes or rickshaws , instead of creating engineering jobs for Pakistan Space program with same money and other research based jobs

They are stuck in the Yellow cab era can't think out of box untill Captain gives them idea then they annouce it after 1-2 week break, and steal his idea

Imran Khan builds hospitals and cancer specialist hospitals, and Nawaz goes and opens a Lasi shop for youth, Nojawan , Lasi pi ker , bath jatain hain unemployed

Every thing's solution to Nawaz is TAKE LOAN from local bank or international lenders , let someone in private sector solve the issue for problems , his governmet can't solve anything

Last note is valid. When politicians are uneducated business men e.g. PM and his brother whose never wrote exams - they had some one write it for them - not my words but a good friend who grew up with them. Other leaders who were all about shafting and stealing putting their own country.
There never has been any visual vision except for mullah doctorine that says vision should be for afterlife only. Until narrow mindedness madness that is sweeping across is relegated out side education and thought process then only there will be progress. There is never any lack of talent but when a culture has stopped reading books; there is no more any future.
