Pakistan should stop being a host to terrorist groups, says Pentagon

ANI | Kabul June 18, 2016 Last Updated at 16:57 IST

The United States defence establishment Pentagon has urged Pakistan to stop providing safe havens to terrorist and extremist groups in its soil in a bid to help improve the security environment of the region.

The Department of Defense in its report to the Congress titled "Enhancing Security and Stability in Afghanistan" stated "Pakistan must play a role in reducing the threat from terrorist and militant groups in the region", reports Khaama Press.

The report further added consistent mid-level military-to-military dialogue between Afghanistan and Pakistan on specific issues, such as the shared threat from Islamic State - Khurasan (IS-K), and occasional discussions at higher levels of the military and government early in the reporting period were encouraging.

"However, sustained Pakistani efforts to pressure the Haqqani Network and the Taliban and to disrupt active threat streams are necessary to help decrease violence in the region", the report said.

The report also mentioned that the U. S. continues to support the re-invigorated efforts of the Quadrilateral Coordination Group, which includes the Afghan, Pakistani, and Chinese governments, to set conditions for an eventual Afghan-led, Afghan-owned peace process with the Taliban and other militant groups.

Despite this, the prospects for a successful dialogue were hampered by the Taliban's April 19, HPA in Kabul this year, the Afghan government's subsequent response imploring Pakistan to take more direct action against extremist groups seeking safe haven in Pakistan, and the death of Taliban leader Mullah Mansour.

"The United States continues to be clear with Pakistan about steps it should take to improve the security environment and deny safe haven to terrorist and extremist groups. These conversations continue to affect not only U.S. dialogue with Pakistan on security and stability in Afghanistan but also during discussion of other issues in the U.S.-Pakistan bilateral relationship such as security assistance," the report added.

This comes as the Afghan officials have long been criticizing Pakistan for failing to take actions against the groups using the Pakistani soil to carry out attacks in Afghanistan.

The Afghan officials suspect the Haqqani terrorist network and the Taliban group leaderships are based in Quetta and Peshawar cities of Pakistan.

Just see what happened few days ago. I didn't see the report so i can't tell if Americans are really saying this but if they are really accusing Pakistan for terrorists then all i can say is.......

OHHH thanks for posting but no time to read propegenda

How about reading the link where you "did" better and compare it with the language used by your "news"..

@Topic. I guess we can't .. Definitely not unless US and Afghanistan take action against the TTP leadership and BLA hiding in their Kunar and other provinces.
BTW content is the same while language is milder :D

Don't you expect Indian media would let any opportunity like this to pass by without spicing it up :P

On Topic : Your foreign office badly needs to tighten its grip on the grim international situation which it is facing

Do more and other nonsense is nothing new .. We have been hearing that since a decade..

Pakistan will do whatever nessecary to secure its interests not US or any other group.. The war in Afghanistan is a lost case ... The final solution will be nothing but negotiations...

US can't expect to not consider Taliban as a terrorist group .. Talk about negotiations and force Pakistan to fight them... That's stupidity ... Pakistan doesn't own or control taliban it has some leverage .. Why would we lose it for and fall into another period of chaos ?

The war in Afghanistan is lost due to USAs own stupidity .. The US had a golden chance when in 2002 the Taliban themselves came to the negotiating Taliban .. Offering a surrender .. But mighty/arrogant US dissed them thinking they can do better .. Well they won't be negotiating anytime soon .. When they are already in a much better position wrt the Americans or Kabul regime ...

Though I am not an expert on this geo political issue but I would like to add my cents.

The Game plan envisaged by Pakistani think tanks for Afghanistan seems to be ruined by current emerging situation.

It is time for Pakistan to go to drawing board and re-plan their Afghan strategy in the face of active Indo- U.S. involvement in the region.

I have no clue whether the Taliban are loyal to Pakistan or their loyalty can be bought like many other mercenary groups. The outcome of this war will heavily depend on the course of actions which these war lords will take.
