Mir Jan Jamali, who is the deputy chairman of the Pakistani Senate, has offered to assist the small war ravaged nation of Azerbaijan in military matters.
Jamali is conducting an official visit to the former Soviet republic and on Wednesday he attended a press conference inside the Azerbaijani parliament building.
Jamali offered to assist Azerbaijan in military technology and equipment, saying that as one of the handful of nations who are having the capability to build nuclear weapons, the defence technology of Pakistan is one of the most advanced in the West Asian region. He urged the oil and natural gas rich Azeri side to invest more money in to the purchase of Pakistani defence equipment.
Jamali also pointed out that senior officials from the Pakistani armed forces are also present in Azerbaijan and they will be holding consultations and dialogues with their peers there. Taking in to account the special relationship that Pakistan is having with Turkey, which is the main ally of Azerbaijan, Jamali offered to extend the same cooperation to his host nation.
Immediately after the breakup of the USSR, the Muslim dominated, but secular Azerbaijan was engaged in a bloody war with its Christian neighbour Armenia for the control of a sparsely populated mountain region known as Nagorno Karabakh. Armenia, which won the war, is still occupying around 14% of the land area of Azerbaijan and more than 500,000 Azerbaijanis were forced to flee their homes. Along with other similar post-Soviet conflicts, such as the ones happened in Abkhazia, Transdniester, South Ossetia, and Chechenya, the fighting in Nagorno Karabakh also received little attention from the Western media.
