Pakistan seeks Chinese expertise in agriculture sector

GUANGZHOU, China (APP) -- President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday said that Pakistan wants to benefit from the Chinese research in agriculture sector as his country needs to feed a burgeoning population of over 170 million in Pakistan and adopt better agriculture practices.

During a visit to South China Agricultural University, a 100 years old prestigious institute of learning and research where he was given a briefing by Vice President of the University Liao Ming, the President said that he wants farmers in Pakistan to maximum utilize the available agricultural land.

He said hybrid seeds, which are not only disease resistant and high yielding are best suited to Pakistan to overcome food shortage.

The President also stressed the need for exchange of students between the two countries and enrolment of more Pakistani students in Chinese universities who are desirous of pursuing higher education.

“Only those nations have prospered and progressed who have made education their priority,” the President noted.

The university is spread over 550 hectares and 41,000 students are enrolled here including 60 from Pakistan.

Earlier Liao Ming gave an overview of the university to the visiting dignitary and briefed him about its various faculties.

He was told that the university is also carrying out research on various varieties of rice.

The President then went around some sections of the university.

Later, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the South China Agricultural University and Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam Pakistan.

Vice Chancellor of Sindh Agriculture University Dr. A. Q. Mughal and President of South Agricultural University signed the MoU.

President Asif Ali Zardari, along with Pakistani ambassador in China Masood Khan also witnessed the signing ceremony.

The MoU, seeks to establish and conduct mutually agreed upon cooperative and collaborative projects in agriculture education, research, training and outreach. This will broaden the international exposure of both the institutions.

The MoU seeks to develop and strengthen the bonds between the students of both the countries and promote better understanding, cooperation and communication between China and Pakistan.

The other areas of cooperation under the MoU will be in agricultural engineering, animal and veterinary sciences, information technology, natural resources and environmental management.

The MoU also seeks capacity building and training of researchers and teaching staff, modernization and upgradation of existing laboratories and establishment of new laboratories to undertake research at Sindh Agriculture University.
