ISLAMABAD, 13 Jumada AL-Awwal/7 April (IINA)-The International Islamic Relief Organization Saudi Arabia (IIROSA) launched the distribution of the sacrificial meat to the poor people in Pakistan.
The launching ceremony was held at its headquarters in Islamabad yesterday.
Saudi Ambassador to Pakistan Abdul Aziz Al-Ghadir, Regional Director of the Muslim World League (MWL) and Director of IIRO in Pakistan and Afghanistan Abdo Atin and Secretary-General of the Pakistani Red Crescent Brig. Mahboob Sardar were present on the occasion.
“The project is part of the humanitarian aid of the Kingdom to the people of Pakistan,” Al-Ghadir said while speaking on the occasion.
Al-Ghadir also commended the services of the IIROSA to alleviate the sufferings of the poor people in Pakistan and elsewhere. The present meat distribution will benefit 8,000 poor families, the relief organization said.
Saudi relief organizations distributed large quantities of meat in November to the victims of floods in Pakistan.
Floods affected the South Asian nation in 2010 and 2011. The two floods that ravaged provinces of Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhawa and Gilgit-Baltistan, left thousands of people homeless.
The Kingdom launched the project for the optimal utilization of the sacrificial meat in 1983. It is called the Saudi Project for Utilization of Hajj Meat, which is managed by the Islamic Development Bank.
More than one million of sheep, cows and camels are slaughtered in Mina and Makkah to mark the successful completion of the Hajj.
After distributing the sacrificial meat among the poor in Makkah and other parts of the Kingdom, the excess meat is transported and distributed among the poor in many countries by local charities and IDB.
Under the project pilgrims can purchase coupons and delegate the bank to sacrifice an animal on their behalf and the meat distributed to the poor.
In 2006, the IDB sold 700,000 sacrificial coupons. It purchased 650,000 sheep, and a large number of camels and cows. Twenty-seven countries benefited from the Hajj sacrificial meat in 2010.
The project is scheduled to distribute more than 200,000 heads of slaughtered meats to beneficiaries in 24 African as well as Asian countries in 2012, according to a recent statement of the Ministry of Hajj.
