Regional cooperation: Pakistan, Russia to set up inter-governmental commission

ISLAMABAD (October 14 2010): Pakistan and Russia agreed to establish an Inter-Governmental Commission to streamline those projects, which could boost regional co-operation. Minister for State and Chairman Board of Investment, Saleem Mandviwalla said this in a joint conference with Ambassador of Russia Budnik Andrey on Wednesday.
The minister who recently visited Russia said his visit to Russia was very fruitful. He met with officials of many Russian companies, which showed their interest in investing in various development sectors of Pakistan. The minister said the Russian giant Tyazhpromexport showed interest in expansion plans of Pakistan Steel Mill. It was the principal organisation in building Pak Steel in Soviet Union days.
Another important meeting will be held with Malta Grid in Moscow, an engineering consultant company, is also ready to participate in the refurbishment of PSM. He said it was the first visit of any government official in last 25 years. "After the end of cold war there has been a turning in the relationship between Russia and Pakistan", he said. He further said that the size of investment by Russian companies depended on the sector.
The Russian ambassador said recent visit of Pakistani delegations to Russia has produced positive results. "Both sides have agreed to set up a Pak-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission for evolving a joint strategy to improve trade and economic ties", he said.
He said the decision to set up an inter-governmental commission was taken in a head of states' meeting. The heads of Russia, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Pakistan gathered there and agreed to lay down such projects which would enhance regional co-operation.
