Pakistan reiterates Support for Palestinian Cause

By Maria A Khan 'Pakistan Times' Diplomatic Correspondent

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has said that Pakistan will continue to support the Palestinian cause and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Al Quds Al Sharif as its capital.

The Prime Minister was talking to the incoming Palestinian Ambassador Maj Gen Yousuf Rajab Radii who called on him at the Prime Minister's House this afternoon.

The Prime Minister said Pakistan's support to the Palestine issue has been unambiguous and consistent and we firmly believe that without a just solution of the Palestinian issue a secure and stable Middle East cannot be achieved.

Pakistan will therefore continue to extend diplomatic, political and moral support to the Palestinian people until a just solution of the Palestine is found.

The Prime Minister said that it is a matter of satisfaction for the government and the people of Pakistan that situation is returning to normalcy in Lebanon.

Pakistan stood by the government and people of Lebanon in their hour of difficulty by demanding at all international forums including the United Nations and the OIC an immediate end to Israeli aggression and enforcement of ceasefire to end the sufferings of the innocent people of Lebanon.

He expressed the hope that sustainable peace is soon established in Lebanon and all issues are settled without resort to the use of force.

The Palestinian Ambassador said that the Palestinian government and people are proud of their friendship with Pakistan and highly appreciate the consistent support given by it to the cause of Palestine.

He also thanked the Prime Minister for the humanitarian assistance of US $ 3 million given by Pakistan and its help in constructing Palestine's Embassy in Islamabad.

We are particularly appreciative of technical help and the scholarships effort to the Palestinian students by the government of Pakistan, he added.

The Envoy expressed the hope that the peace process between Pakistan and India is resumed soon and the Kashmir issue is settled peacefully.

A valid proclamation from an Islamic country.

One wonders what would be the effect on the Track 2 diplomacy of building bridges with Israel. Prima facie, both should move without hitch.

Ties with Israel has many positive manifestations, inter alia strategic and economic, as also some serious misgiving for those in the Islamic world who do not accept the establishment of a Jewish state carved out of Palestine.

It is a hard choice.
