Pakistan refuses to accept its citizen convicted for spying in Bhopal

Pakistani national Sajid Munir has served a 12-year sentence in Bhopal on charges of spying.

While Pakistan has sentenced former Indian naval officer Kulbhushan Jadhav to death on charges of spying, it refuses to acknowledge its citizens who have been arrested by Indian authorities on similar charges as Pakistanis.

One such living example is Sajid Munir of Rahimyaar district of Punjab who is lodged in a Bhopal detention centre for more than 9 months now.

Sajid had come to India on a valid visa in 2002. He was caught with maps of sensitive installations in Kohefiza area in Bhopal the same year and was thereafter tried for spying. A Bhopal court convicted him for charges framed against him and was sentenced for 12 years in jail.

Munir completed his 12-year sentence in June 2016 and after that the Bhopal police tried to send him back to Pakistan but on multiple occasions the Pakistani government has refused to accept him as their own.

Munir has given specific evidence about the murder of his brother in Rahimyaar district and also of the murder charges that were framed against him in Pakistan. He claims he had committed the murder in Pakistan to avenge his brother's murder.

According to additional SP Bhopal, Rajesh Bhadoria, the Pakistani government is deliberately not accepting Munir as this would expose their spying operations in India. "We have given the relevant documents. The proof that he has given of his being a Pakistani have also been passed on through the Pakistani embassy but they have so far refused to acknowledge his existence and have also refused to accept him back in Pakistan," Bhadoria told India Today.

Till the time the Pakistan government accepts Munir, he will remain lodged at a detention centre attached to Shahjehanabad police station in Bhopal and will continue to enjoy Indian hospitality.

Munir is not the only Pakistani charged of spying staying in Madhya Pradesh. Two more Pakistanis who have been convicted for similar offences are presently lodged in Bhopal and Gwalior central jails.

"We have two Pakistani nationals lodged in Madhya Pradesh jails. While one is in the Gwalior Central Jail the other one is in the Bhopal Central Jail. They have already been convicted and are serving their sentence and they are being given all those facilities that are given to any normal Indian prisoner," Sanjay Chaudhary, DG Jails, Madhya Pradesh, said.
