FAISALABAD:
Pakistan Railways is contemplating an express cargo train preferably in collaboration with the private sector, said Additional General Manager Railways Maqsood ul Nabi.

He was addressing the business community at the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI) on Friday.

Nabi said that income is only generated from cargo trains as passenger trains are run to facilitate the masses. He said that from 2011 to 2013, only one cargo train has operated between Karachi Port and Lahore, but now after financial improvements in Pakistan Railways, 10 cargo trains are being managed.

Nabi said that each train has 27 wagons and each wagon has a capacity of 60 tons. Similarly, the speed at which they travel has increased from 55 kilometres (km) per hour to 80km per hour.

why not use the river system for transporting cargo?
it is much cheaper that way

Just how old is this rolling stock? The photo shows some pretty rickety wagons.
