Pakistan plans to borrow more than $4bn from the Saudi-backed Islamic Development Bank as part of its attempts to restore dangerously low stocks of foreign currency.

Two officials have told the Financial Times that the Jeddah-based bank has agreed to make a formal offer to lend Islamabad the money when Imran Khan takes over as prime minister. They added that they expect Asad Umar, Mr Khan’s proposed finance minister, to accept. “The paperwork is all in place,” said one senior adviser in Islamabad. “The IDB is waiting for the elected government to take charge before giving their approval.” The person added that the loan would not cover Pakistan’s expected financing gap of at least $25bn during this financial year but was “an important contribution”.

Mr Khan, Pakistan’s former cricket captain, is expected to take over as prime minister in the coming days after his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party won the most seats in last month’s election — though it fell short of an outright majority. One of his first jobs will be to repair the country’s balance of payments problem, with high imports and stagnant exports having bled the country of much of its foreign exchange reserves. Speaking to reporters in Islamabad this week,

Mr Umar, who served as the PTI’s shadow finance minister while in opposition, warned: “The situation is dire. We’ve got $10bn dollars of central bank reserves, we’ve got somewhere between $8bn and $9bn in short-term liabilities, and therefore your net reserves are close to nothing.”

Officials have already drawn up plans to borrow up to $12bn from the International Monetary Fund — though such a bailout is likely to come with strings attached, such as a demand to see the details behind billions of dollars’ worth of Chinese loans. The governments in Islamabad and Riyadh have moved closer in recent months after Pakistan agreed to send an undeclared number of troops to 'train and advise' security forces © AFP

Mr Umar is therefore exploring what other options remain open to him, of which the IDB loan is one. Officials said the loan would be used mainly to pay for oil imports, with higher crude prices having contributed to Pakistan’s problems.

One official at the Pakistani central bank who has been involved in negotiations with the IDB said the loan had the backing of the Saudi government, “which wants to play a part in rescuing Pakistan from its present crisis”. Recommended Geopolitical shifts Imran Khan, cricket star with a taste for victory Islamabad and Riyadh have moved closer in recent months after Pakistan agreed to send an undeclared number of troops to “train and advise” security forces there. The Pakistan government insists that the soldiers will not be used to fight in Yemen however, something the Saudis had previously requested.

Despite the promise of money from the IDB, economists warn that Mr Khan’s new government will still have to enact potentially unpopular spending cuts and tax rises to help repair the government’s balance sheet. “The budget deficit shot up to about 7 per cent of gross domestic product during the last financial year,” said Waqar Masood Khan, a former finance ministry official. “Bringing that down to the target of 4 per cent is not going to be easy.”

Ummah to the rescue....

. . . .
Hopefully the interest rates will be adequate.:-)

KSA is a generous country reflecting the world famous and fabled Arabian/Arab hospitality.

Reflected in KSA's humanitarian aid which few countries can compare with.

Its just business, what has religion to do with giving Pakistan a loan lol? Plus we don't even know the hidden clauses KSA would have, I can guess some of them might include free hand given to funding extremist mosques and madarsas in Pakistan.

Who mentioned religion? You, not me.

Are you blaming others for your own uneducated locals and local Mullah's? KSA has funded mosques in all corners of the world (with state approval from each state) and I only see problems with extremism in a few select countries. I wonder why? In KSA you don't see Sunnis (Hanbalis, Shafi'is, Malikis, Hanafis), Sufis or Shias (Twelver, Zaydi, Ismailis), basically every Muslim sect is indigenous to KSA, killing each other.

Stop blaming others for your own faults. Afghans are doing the same crying in relation to Pakistan and Pakistanis. Certain Pakistanis are doing the same in relation to KSA and Iran. Wake up and smell the coffee.

Not to start a long discussion (as I don't bother and I don't want to waste my time with the usual Arab-obsessed individuals on PDF) but KSA's recent many and promising reforms, do you know which Muslim group is mostly AGAINST them and voice their criticism online? Muslims from South Asia. Funny.

Pakistan can help in Yemen

There is no such need. 3.5 years too late. 90% of Yemen is under the control of the Yemeni army, KSA and the Arab coalition. We have learned tremendously valuable lessons here 3.5 years into the civil war. Largest conflict that a Muslim country is taking part in, in the entire Muslim world.

KSA will ask for Nawaz sharif freedom from jail in return one of many things.

Saudi, Qatari and UAE funded mosques are known to fund extremism all over the world. And one is obsessed with Saudi Arabia(except from maybe Iranian Mullahs), don't think too much of yourself. For me Pakistan and its internal problems are important, to deal with it it it important to first get rid of foreign funded tools, its not hard to get rid of local trouble makers. One problem at a time......

Oh and good luck with your ''reforms''.:)

Sure, if you say so, lol. Others say the exact same thing about Pakistani funded mosques and your religious and military establishment. Just ask around your neighborhood.

However continue blaming your own faults on others. I am sure that this will solve the problems.

Seems to be the exact opposite.

Ditto.:)

The Saudis have helped Pakistan before also without getting a lot. Unlike Iran that backstabbed us in 95 on Kashmir in OIC and stations RAW operatives and terrorists to destabilize Pakistan.

There is a certain segment that only spreads poison regarding Saudis trying to divert from their own pathetic ghaddari for American money and Irani influence.

This segment also is employed in huge no.s in Saudi Arabia.

This phobia for a certain nefarious purpose needs to end, if they have this huge issue with Al-Saud they should ask their brethren employed to quit their jobs in SAudi and not feed their children with Saudi money.

This was expected
Once Imran Khan takes oath, it will get clearer Pakistan's allies will help. Trump & USA only desire is to corner Pakistan to IMF. US has lost a lot of leverage fom the past, its wish is to regain that thru conditions of IMF.

Pakistani establishment as we all know is infiltrated by Wahabi extremists. Once they are purged all Saudi backed mosques would be demolished and turned into shelters for homeless.

Whatever you say Arab-obsessed, Ahmadi fanatic. BTW did you know that your supposed Prophet claimed Arab ancestry and spoke Arabic? In other words greatly Arabized.

Anyway it is not my business what your elite is doing inside Pakistan.

A few inconvenient truths that the usual Arab-obsessed/KSA-obessed (FORGETTING THAT LOCALS HAVE NO SAY UNLIKE IN SAY PAKISTAN) don't want to hear.

BTW, lastly, instead of "begging" KSA for money once again, why don't you beg your beloved Arabized Iranian Mullah's for donations? Maybe they can kick out their 3 million Afghan expats and employ Pakistanis instead? That would be optimal if it meant that KSA had no ties to your likes.

I wouldn't care about Saudi Assrabia if it stopped interfering in Pakistan's internal affairs, and as for being a fanatic, don't worry we don't slit people's throats or blow ourselves in public, that's your specialty. Its not just Pakistan, the whole world is worried about poison coming from your sand castle.

.
Now don't spit in the same bowel that feeds you,

Saudi money=terrorism. Most of the sane people know, even your own chubby prince knows it that's why he is desperately trying to build a new image for you country. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets assassinated by some rogue Wahabi who are angry at equal rights for women.

Even the newly created one that you are following as an Ahmadi.

You do realize that I consider myself a secular Pakistani right? I don't care for your desert cult.
