Pakistan offers to share nuke technology with Bangladesh

Dhaka, May 20 : Pakistan has offered to help Bangladesh with the latter's proposed first nuclear power reactor.

Pakistan's High Commissioner to Bangladesh Alamgir Babar has said that Islamabad is ready to share nuclear technology with Dhaka for civilian purposes to help tackle that country's massive energy crisis.

The Daily Star quoted Babar as saying that Pakistan's offer was "on the table" and it was for Bangladesh to decide whether the country wanted to discuss it.

"We have a programme for nuclear energy. We are going ahead with that. It is up to Bangladesh to decide what they want," Babar told reporters.

He said discussions over the matter could take place within the parameters of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) even though Pakistan is not a part of it. Bangladesh is a signatory to NPT.

Pakistan is the latest to make such an offer that would be viewed with interest by the strategic community.

The caretaker Bangladesh Government's Foreign Adviser Iftekhar A Chowdhury has already discussed nuclear energy cooperation with Russia and China after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recently cleared Bangladesh to use nuclear power for civilian use.

Russians showed willingness to help during Chowdhury's Moscow visit last month.

Bangladesh has revived the idea of the project it in the last two years since India and the US got into discussions over a nuclear deal, realising the need for meeting its growing energy needs.

I also read last night that Jordan has also approched Pakistan asking for help in the civil nuclear filled. I think we should help and do as much as we can.

i think this is a bad idea. if something is leaked somewhere then the whole world will blame pakistan and the ISI. i think we should concentrate on making nuke technology available for our own citizens first rather than for other countries.

Well, as I understand it Power reactors are very different from making Nukes. And every country has the right to Nuclear Energy considering that Oil is running out.

Pakistan will export civil reactors only, we don't have an export design for military reactors.

Agreed with UP.

Even if it was on the cards, ToT does not help unless you have the requisite scientific, technology and manufacturing base, in all the related areas, to absorb that ToT.

Does Bangladesh have that base?"

What we are probably looking at is export and assembly of NPP's and related components manufactured in Pakistan/China, and then training and assistance for Bangladesh to maintain/repair the facilities under IAEA safeguards.

As long as Pakistan conducts everything transparently and adheres to IAEA safeguards and oversight, I do not see how we could be blamed for any actions Bangladesh takes.

:) wow
I guess its time to help Bangladesh but at the same time we had to take care of the certain anti-Pak community of so-called intellectuals.

the smoking gun will always point to us - anyway just playing devils advocate - hasnt AQKhan restrictions been eased - i was just wondering - will he be the one to offer expertise to BD....naah

i think it is a good move. We obviously have the capability and under NPTregulations we would be able to provide such help. As to fingerpointing and other pressurizing matters, we must get used to these. They will happen irrespective of what we do. We must make syure that we remain within the framework of the Law and let the rest go to hell.

whose going to listen/believe to us with our blemished reputation in this area.

I think its a starategic move rather than helping the BD to develop its first civillian nuclear power plant . There must be somthing we will get in return. Now that part of the story is hidden .
I guess there is indian presence in Tajikistan which gives it a very critcal place in the central asian energy rich area . The india and US are collectively making efforts to some how get into Nepal . Wel on the other hand China and Pakistan are trying to get Sirilanka and Bangladesh in their Loby .
India has an AirBase in Tajikistan .
Maybe in return BanglaDesh may offer Pakistan to use its airspace .
So we can have an airbase there Which will definately give us some kind of strategic benefit.

I think this is a welcome gesture. China has also proposed assistance to Bangladesh in the field of civil nuclear energy. Predictably some in Bangladesh consider India our natural ally but India has never offered this type of technical help to us and if they ever do there would be too many conditions attached for it to be a feasible option. Cooperation between China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal would be good for the region. Some type of overall security arrangement could be the next step in South Asian cooperation.
