y from the stereotypical images of niqab-clad women or men yielding weapons, Manolo Ty – a German photographer – has chosen the photograph of a South Asian man engaged in traditional wrestling sport kushti for his new coffee table book, Pakistan Now.

Ty – a traveller, artist, and fan of martial arts – observed the country’s struggle in a wrestling match in Hasilpur, Punjab. He believes that while Pakistan continues searching for its identity as a nation, his photo depicting kushti – played mostly in Pakistan’s rural parts since decades – can certainly define its cultural heritage.

Speaking to Geo.tv at his studio in Friedrichstrasse, Berlin, Ty revealed the idea behind his new book’s title. He said, “As a photographer, I wished to capture a moment from the present, the ‘now’, over any other time. This led me to name my book ‘Pakistan Now’.”

It didn’t take much for Ty to fall in love with Pakistan, since varied experiences, such as “living with a tribal elder in the troubled Peshawar, being part of the mystical sufi nights in Lahore, and getting lost in the Cholistan desert,” helped him see the nation in a different light.

Most of Ty’s shots are beautiful moments of common Pakistanis, depicting the strength of human spirit. Each of the images had the power to indulge one in the colourful days from the lives of those whom many in the Western world would never have the chance to meet.

Pakistan’s two-time Oscar-winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy praised Ty’s photography in Pakistan Now, saying, “Manolo Ty has beautifully captured the magic in the ordinary lives of Pakistani people, finding beauty in unexpected places and bringing it to life. The captivating imagery illustrates the tales of the rich cultural heritage of Pakistan and the simple pleasures of life.”

Pakistan Now shows the unique aesthetic that Ty brings to social documentary-style photography. Photographed between 2013 and 2014, the book’s 276 images feature over 25 locations and, together with stories and observations, chart the artist’s intimate journey into unknown territory. The collection shows a new and startling present-moment perspective of Pakistan.

Pakistan Now’s premiere in Hotel Oderberger Berlin fetched a multicultural audience, who were keen to know more about the country it aims to illustrate.

Ty explained that many Germans know only one side of Pakistan being projected in the mainstream media. Therefore, he opted to underscore human dignity and cultural diversity rather than misery and suffering.

In response to a question, Ty noted that he has become fond of Pakistanis’ hospitality, and expressed his desire for an intercultural dialogue between Germans and Pakistanis. To start, Pakistan Now can be the first step, bringing different facets of the Pakistani society to Germany.
