Pakistan not to import Indian tomatoes though prices soar
The price of tomato has soared to Rs 300 per kg in parts of Lahore and elsewhere in Punjab province, Dawn newspaper reported.

Pakistan
will not import tomatoes from India though its price has shot up to 300 Pakistani rupees (PKR) per kg in parts of the country, Minister for Food Security Sikandar Hayat Bosan has said, amidst a chill in bilateral ties.

Pakistan is currently facing a shortage of tomatoes in the domestic market. While imports from India fill the gap each year, the move to bar containers from entering the country from across the border have created a huge demand-supply gap, the Express Tribune reported.

Local vendors are currently waiting for Sindh’s produce to reach the market, the report said.

Mr. Bosan told reporters Lahore on September 25 that the tomato and onion crisis in Pakistan will be over within a few days after their crops ripen in Balochistan. He made it clear that the government will not import vegetables from India.

The price of tomato has soared to PKR300 per kg in parts of Lahore and elsewhere in Punjab Province, Dawn newspaper reported.

This is in stark contrast to the price of PKR100-120 per kg in the recent past. The government had also fixed the price for tomatoes between PKR132-140 per kg, media reports said.

Meanwhile, the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has hailed Mr. Bosan’s announcement of not importing tomatoes from India, saying that the move would help local farmers and save foreign exchange for Pakistan. It was a right decision, said, the LCCI president Abdul Basit, who said that the country has the resources to feed the population. “Therefore, local growers should be facilitated to the maximum and their issues should be resolved on a priority basis,” Mr. Basit said in a statement.

“The government needs to increase the cropped area to avoid any crisis-like situation.

“We cannot afford to stay where we are today in terms of cropped area and per hectare yield because we are already running short of per capita food availability.”

The LCCI said that though almost 43% of Pakistan’s labour force is dependent upon agriculture, the yield gap in the four major crops of Pakistan is three times compared to the best producers in the world such as China and Egypt. “Low yield has contributed to poverty in rural areas besides forcing the country to import agriculture produce to feed its population,” he said.

The India-Pakistan ties took a nosedive after the January 2016 Pathankot terror attack and the Uri incident in September in the same year. India blamed terrorists based in Pakistan for these terror attacks.

India has told Islamabad that only when Pakistan-sponsored cross-border terrorism ends New Delhi would be ready for talks it.

Can't Pakistan grow enough tomatoes? Let the freakin Chinese agro-industry into Pakistan. And see what happens. Don't then complain about "local industry" please.

Abdul Basit, who said that the country has the resources to feed the population
Then grow the damned things.

You don't want Chinese tomatoes, trust me. Having a farming background I can tell you nobody is enjoying this more than farmers because of the games the government has been playing with them for years.

I was in market today, price here was inr 12. Pakistanis are quite rich to buy at those prices.

Whole agriculture sector needs make over. Pakistan food import bill is growing because of inneficient agriculture. Only China invesment in CPEC can save it.

Pakistan should be food exporting country and by that I don't mean exporting subsidzed wheat and sugar.

This isn't sustainable at all. Consumers in cities will not put up with Rs300 per kg and eventually gov will give in and import. Pakistani farmers need to think long term.

@lastofthepatriots Why is the yield so low? That is where the problem is. If Egyptian farmers can do it what is wrong with ours?

Yield was low because Pakistan was importing and the rate was low. Farmers got caught off guard because usually demand gets higher around Eid and all of a sudden gop decides not to import. Plus due to seasonal changes it was hard to catch up as demand was rising, but the prices will normalize in a few weeks or a month.

I doubt they import Ganga watered tomatoes. Most likely from neighbouring Sikhoo Punjab using good sweet Indus tributary water !
Yeah that sweetness is not what you think it is. So next time you are in the motherland make doubly sure before digging in that gravy that tomatoes were home grown.

It's actually the government's import policies that are ruining the chance for farmers to meet the demand of the country without going into severe loss.

Problem with Pakistani farmers is they can get greedy and gov have no option but to import in $$ which is waste of resources when demand can be met locally. Agriculture sector needs to be regulated to produce more and import less.

Not to worry Gangoo. We are a farming people. What we eat grows in our fields. On soil that is sacred. It is the soil that gave birth to civilization. Even your countrymen worship it.

Farmers can only do so much. There was a cold wave in March in Sindh and Southern Punjab this year which left tomatoes unripened. It's hard to battle with the elements and the only solution I could possibly see is green house farming, but with the state of energy resources and corruption plaguing Pakistan I see it very difficult for your average poor farmer to be able to maintain a green house.
