ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has discovered a new gas reserve in southern Sindh province that would help reduce acute gas shortages for industry and transport, the petroleum ministry said Friday.

Italian energy major ENI with joint venture partners Pakistan Petroleum Limited and Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company made the discovery in the Kirthar Fold Belt region 270 kilometres north of Karachi.

“During the production testing gas flowed at 33 million cubic feet per day highlighting an excellent potential for the future for energy needs of the country,” the ministry said in a statement.

Officials said that under an early production scheme, gas supply from the new reserve would be possible within three years.

Pakistan’s Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Sohail Wajahat Siddiqui said that the discovery was “good news for the nation and the energy sector of Pakistan”.

The discovery of new oil and gas reservoirs were “vital” to cope with the prevailing energy shortage in the country, Siddiqui said.

ENI has been in Pakistan since 2000 and is the country’s largest producer, with an average production of 54,800 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2011.

Pakistan has had an endemic energy crisis for years, characterised by frequent blackouts, which has crippled the economy.

The crisis is blamed on chronic mismanagement and corruption.

We can enjoy several benefits if our jahil government didn't show corruption with it:

Natural Gas Benefits and Considerations

Compressed and liquefied natural gas are clean, domestically produced alternative fuels. Using these fuels in natural gas vehicles increases energy security and lowers emissions. Using renewable natural gas provides even more benefits. Like any alternative fuel, there are some considerations to take into account when contemplating the use of CNG or LNG.

Energy Security

In 2010, the United States imported about 49% of the petroleum it consumed—two-thirds of which is used to fuel vehicles in the form of gasoline and diesel. With much of the world's petroleum reserves located in politically volatile countries, the United States is vulnerable to supply disruptions. However, because U.S. natural gas reserves are abundant, this alternative fuel can be domestically produced and used to offset the petroleum currently being imported for transportation use.

Vehicle Performance

Natural gas vehicles (NGVs) are similar to gasoline or diesel vehicles with regard to power, acceleration, and cruising speed. The driving range of NGVs is generally less than that of comparable gasoline and diesel vehicles because, with natural gas, less overall energy content can be stored in the same size tank as the more energy-dense gasoline or diesel fuels. Extra natural gas storage tanks or the use of LNG can help increase range for larger vehicles.

In heavy-duty vehicles, dual-fuel, compression-ignited engines are slightly more fuel-efficient than spark-ignited dedicated natural gas engines. However, a dual-fuel engine increases the complexity of the fuel-storage system by requiring storage of both types of fuel.

Lower Emissions
Compared with vehicles fueled by conventional diesel and gasoline, natural gas vehicles can produce lower levels of some emissions, depending on vehicle type, drive cycle, and engine calibration. And because CNG fuel systems are completely sealed, CNG vehicles produce no evaporative emissions. Visit FuelEconomy.gov to find more information about the environmental benefits and petroleum savings of commercially available light-duty natural gas vehicles.

ptions, see NGVAmerica's Guide to Available Natural Gas Vehicles and Engines (PDF) and the Heavy-Duty Vehicle and Engine Search. The number of light-duty natural gas vehicles from original equipment manufacturers are limited but growing. For availability see the Light-Duty Vehicle Search or Clean Cities 2012 Vehicle Buyer's Guide (PDF).

No offense. Pakistan have boasted such discoveries in the past. I think its epic mismanagement on the Pak govt to waste all its resources. They boast bout resources but take no effort to extract them.
Even if they are corrupt, get some money from company and start working on it. Not make the resources idle.

exactly but raja there is tiny problem that they are not just corrupt people...they are "senseless' corrupt people:hitwall:

this could be election stunt...

and how can you say that?:what: what elections has to do with discovery of gas?

hmmm, yes it could be... they will make some stunts, by saying, this gas will boost our economy etc... will bring the gas out if we come into power again...

Corruption in sub continental countries have become too mainstream, that it has become a way of life. In Tamil Nadu, politicians are corrupt, i accept. They get money, but get the project done somehow. Atleast there is something.

But there, they do nothing. Something have to fundamentally changed.

It could be. Remember when the THAR coal reserves were discovered? Are they still extracting? or fooling the people?
Its a question people of Pakistan have to ask.

not every political party acts like PPP when come to rule..like dude you are forgetting Mustafa Kamal who completed various projects in Karachi and he was ranked as second out of top 5 of Asia!

ahan...yeah i agree at this point....BUT ppp ONLY BEGS FOR VOTE IN THE NAME OF BHUTTO...or by throwing insults on pml-n...i don't think so that they can even imagine to add this point in their agenda!

No dear. I do not say, that every party is corrupt and every politician is one. What i just meant to say was, even if the party is corrupt, get the money and get the project going. It will be beneficial to the region and the country as a whole.
Its the lack of steps by them is what baffles me. They are making the resources lie waste, without any use to themselves (through corrupt money) and to the nation.
Which is why i think, it might be a election stunt.
