In the late 80's Iraqis never knew that America will ever attack them, neither could Afghans predict that decade after Russian invasion US will attack their country and be a permanent resident. Pakistanis too have been made to believe America is our friend but it all is going wayward now. What we could just foresee is what we have started experiencing now in our homeland listening to the deafening noise of American boots on our holy soil.
We have seen the heart rending footages on our televisions in which Americans are breaking into the houses of Iraqi people, dishonoring their women, beating their children and killing their men in their frenzy. Pictures of Abu-Gharib and stories about Guantanamo Bay have not faded from our memories. But madness seldom ends.
American designs are quite evident from the US-led ground assault on a village near Angoor Adda in South Waziristan, killing twenty innocent people on September 4 and then US drone attack in the Momadkhel village of North Waziristan, killing six people on September 5. These attacks show the change of policy. It means that from now on America by no means is going to share any actionable information and intelligence with the Pakistani forces as they do not want an action from them, rather they would operate at their own in the Pakistani areas and that too without prior permission.
The most likely to win American presidential candidate Barak Obama said in a speech: "1 understand that President Musharraf has his own challenges. But let me make this clear. There are terrorists holed up in those mountains who murdered 3,000 Americans. They are plotting to strike again. If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won't act, we will."
In other words Obama declared unilateral military action on the Pakistani soil. This is one such example of the jingoistic heralds that make the policy of today's America.
Let us now talk about the response of the hard-earned civilian government of Pakistan, the military and the possible solutions to guard the sovereignty of Pakistan. It was the first incursion on Pakistani soil by American troops. Gen Pervz Kayani has forcefully denied that there was any agreement or understanding with the coalition forces whereby they are allowed to conduct operations on our side of the border.
Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani has genuinely backed Gen Kayani's statement, professing it as the policy of the civilian government and that the military had the full support of the present government. President Zardari under the spell of his unquestioned political wisdom has chosen to remain less expressive on this serious issue as yet. But both the president and the prime minister have this singularity of views that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country would not be put on stake at any cost. Now this is out of sheer honesty that both heads of the state and government are speaking in favour of the right of our homeland. This stance seems to be surprising after the marshmallow attitude of the previous regime towards United States of America.
If we look back analytically in the recent past, the party manifesto that was designed by late Benazir Bhutto unfolds the strong viewpoint of PPP towards terrorism. Furthermore, it showed the dedication and determination of the party to eradicate this evil, called terrorism, Benazir said very clearly that PPP would not let the religious seminaries turn into arms depots or military headquarters to impose their will on the people. Pakistan will be a free state where people are safe, secure and free in the true sense of the word. PPP came into power following these lines but had to face a twisted situation.
The recent attacks in which even no important terrorist or high-value target was killed, have only added to the gravity and complexity of the situation. This has surely pushed back Pakistan's efforts to isolate militants. If we look at the ground reality, all who died were civilians. The causalities included women, children and men. When the other people reached there, they found all of them dead outside their homes with bullets in their heads. Now looking at this cruelty, what else can be expected from these tribal people but to join hands with militants to fight for something they take as rightful.
Right after the sad demise of Benair Bhulto Mr Zardari held the country together even in those times of unbridled anger. But now the situation is altogether different. He is the president of the country. He has two roles to perform. Firstly, he has to maintain good diplomatic and strategic relations with United States, secondly as the representative of a civilian democratic government, he has to sustain and retain the popular support from the people of Pakistan.
Pakistan has seen the dawn of democracy after almost 9 years. Uninviting moves from United States are making things difficult for democracy to flourish. The Americans have started disrespecting Pakistan's sovereignty and disregarding the sentiments of the people of Pakistan. We cannot fight a superpower but diplomatically this issue can be raised and put to the floor. Present government has made it crystal clear that Pakistan is fully prepared to cooperate with United States, but it will not allow foreign troops to operate in Pakistan.
The PPP government has been pursuing a policy of national consensus from day one and it would like all parties to sit together to come up with an actionable solution to this important national issue. There is no hurried remedy to the plague of terrorism. Terror breeds terror. We have to find a sane, dynamic and solid solution, keeping in concern the giant in front. In this grave situation we have to strengthen our civilian democratic government with all the positive support that we can render. Let's all be impartial for now and be true Pakistanis for the time being.
