Pakistan needs more N-plants, IAEA told

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that it needs to build more nuclear power plants to overcome a severe energy shortfall and support its socio-economic development.
Addressing IAEAs annual general conference in Vienna on Wednesday, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commissions Chairman Dr Ansar Parvez said the IAEA should take larger initiatives to facilitate construction of nuclear power plants in member states on a non-discriminatory basis to contribute to their social and economic development.
He said the Chashma-I and Karachi nuclear power projects were operational, while Chashma-II would be commissioned next year.
He said Pakistan had to its credit more than 45 years of safe reactor operation experience and a technical and engineering infrastructure to maintain and provide technical support to the plants.
Dr Parvez said the government wanted the PAEC to install 8,800MW of nuclear power capacity by 2030.
He said the country had set up a strong and independent safety and security infrastructure, including an independent Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority, and was party to several international conventions.
