Pakistan military playing double game on Afghanistan: NYT

New York: Slamming Pakistan for refusing to cut ties with the Haqqani network of militants, a leading US daily has said the military of the 'crippled and chaotic' state continues to play a "double game" of accepting aid from America while enabling the Afghan Taliban.

The New York Times said in the editorial piece titled 'Crippled, Chaotic Pakistan' that for years, Pakistan ignored the Obama administration's pleas to crack down on militants who cross over to attack American forces in Afghanistan.

Recent cross-border raids by Taliban militants who kill Pakistani soldiers should give Islamabad a reason to take that complaint more seriously, it said.

"Fighting extremists should be grounds for common cause, but there is no sign that Pakistan's military leaders get it. They see the need to confront the virulent Afghan-based insurgency that threatens their own country and has killed thousands of Pakistani soldiers and civilians.

"But they refuse to cut ties with the Haqqanis and other militants, who give Islamabad leverage in Afghanistan and are the biggest threat to American efforts to stabilise that country," the Times said.

It added that Pakistan's political system is growing "ever more dysfunctional," even as the need to take on the border chaos becomes more urgent.

The editorial said it makes sense that India becomes more involved in Afghanistan, "as long as its activities are transparent", and Indian companies invest in the war-torn nation.

Pakistan had a chance to develop into a more stable country after 2001 when it had strong leverage with the United States, which needed help to defeat al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan. Pakistan also received billions of dollars in aid. "But the army continues its double game accepting money from the Americans while enabling the Afghan Taliban and the politicians remain paralysed.

"Soon, most American troops will be gone from Afghanistan. And Pakistan will find it harder to fend off its enemies, real and perceived," it said. The editorial said some in the US Congress want to designate the Haqqanis as a terrorist organisation but such a step would be "unwise" because it could lead to Pakistan's being designated a terrorist state subject to sanctions and making cooperation even harder.

"The United States has no choice but to try to work with Pakistan, including the army, when it can."

While Obama administration officials are "reaching the limits of our patience," the United States cannot walk away from Pakistan as it needs its help in reopening a critical supply route to Afghanistan and in urging the Taliban to engage in peace talks so that combat troops can be withdrawn from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

The US also needs to monitor Islamabad's growing nuclear arsenal and has little choice but to continue drone attacks on militants in Pakistan.

While US officials hope the crisis in relations caused by the killing of Osama bin Laden and other events will pass, they are holding the Pakistanis more at arm's length and setting narrower goals.

If US is aware about this so called double game of Pakistan, why dont they start doing the same?

I am bored of this topic seriously. It is like Husband wife complaining about each other all time.

Get divorce and be done with it.

.
First of all, the so called aid by Americans is the money spent by Pakistan on their war (it was never Pakistan's war) and bout 35000 lives Pakistan scrificed in their war, both you and your American friends forget to count.

Secondly, Americans have allowed CIA,RAW,MOSAAD to interfere in Pakistan from Afghanistan and almost every week there is an attack on Pakistan from their side, what are they doning to stop such events but shamelessly they ask Pakistan to do their work.

Thirdly, American have spent more than 100 billions in Afghanistan and have latest technology and still more than half on Afghanistan is under taliban's control and they expect Pakistan to overcome them by paying (refered to First point) 10 billion and giving no technology.

So stop blaming Pakistan when Problems lie inside Afghanistan.

They are already doing the same for years now, giving shelter to TTP guys, BLA terrorists and then paving they way for them to go to Switzerland etc etc. Emptying their border posts and bases when PA launches operations on this side of the border so that militants can easily cross over into Afghanistan and have sanctuary, are all double standards by the US.

NYT and other western media outlets instead of printing such biased opinions / articles should ask the US / NATO that how much forces they deployed for capturing oil and compare it to how much forces they deployed to actually combat militants and against an organization which is supposedly linked to killing of thousands of Americans, facts and figures would be clear enough that US is not serious about the war in Afghanistan nor they were from day one. They were serious about Oil, so they send 3-4 times they number of soldiers in Iraq compared to Afghanistan, they checked cross border infiltration by deploying more troops and assets in Iraq and checked the flow of militants and the surge had more number of troops as compared to Afghanistan.

We have nearly 120-140K troops in just the tribal belt and are not able to control the Taliban, how can US think it can deploy just 100K troops and control whole of Afghanistan with just 200 or so border posts in total looking after the hundreds of KMs of Pak-Afghan border.

So the double standard face & hypocrisy of US is very clear, they were never serious from day one, thus don't blame us.

Two TTP heads were killed by US drones itself right?

If they are 'supporting' them, why should they?

Crippled, Chaotic Pakistan

For years, Pakistan has ignored the Obama administration’s pleas to crack down on militants who cross from Pakistan to attack American forces in Afghanistan. Recent cross-border raids by Taliban militants who kill Pakistani soldiers should give Islamabad a reason to take that complaint more seriously.

Last week, Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Pakistan’s army chief of staff, raised the issue in a meeting with Gen. John Allen, the commander of American and NATO forces in Afghanistan. He demanded that NATO go after the militants on the Afghan side of the border, according to Pakistani news reports. General Allen demanded that Pakistan act against Afghan militants given safe haven by its security services, especially the Haqqani network, which is responsible for some of the worst attacks in Kabul.

Fighting extremists should be grounds for common cause, but there is no sign that Pakistan’s military leaders get it. They see the need to confront the virulent Afghan-based insurgency that threatens their own country and has killed thousands of Pakistani soldiers and civilians. But they refuse to cut ties with the Haqqanis and other militants, who give Islamabad leverage in Afghanistan and are the biggest threat to American efforts to stabilize that country.
Pakistan’s political system is growing ever more dysfunctional, even as the need to take on the border chaos becomes more urgent. Obama administration officials are “reaching the limits of our patience,” Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said recently. But the United States cannot just walk away. It needs Pakistan’s help in reopening a critical supply route to Afghanistan and in urging the Taliban to engage in peace talks so that combat troops can be withdrawn from Afghanistan by the end of 2014. It also needs to monitor Islamabad’s growing nuclear arsenal.

Some in Congress want to designate the Haqqanis as a terrorist organization. That would be unwise because such a move could lead to Pakistan’s being designated a terrorist state subject to sanctions and make cooperation even harder. The United States has no choice but to try to work with Pakistan, including the army, when it can.

Officials hope the crisis in relations caused by the killing of Osama bin Laden and other events will pass. Meanwhile, they are holding the Pakistanis more at arm’s length and setting narrower goals; President Obama declined to hold an official meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari at the NATO summit meeting in Chicago in May.

The United States has little choice but to continue drone attacks on militants in Pakistan. It has urged India to become more involved in Afghanistan and on Thursday, a conference was held in New Delhi to urge companies to invest there. That makes sense as long as India’s activities are transparent. Pakistan is paranoid about India, which it sees as a mortal adversary.

After 2001, Pakistan had a chance to develop into a more stable country. It had strong leverage with the United States, which needed help to defeat Al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan. Pakistan received billions of dollars in aid and the promise of billions more, which Washington has begun to suspend or cancel. But the army continues its double game — accepting money from the Americans while enabling the Afghan Taliban — and the politicians remain paralyzed. Soon, most American troops will be gone from Afghanistan. And Pakistan will find it harder to fend off its enemies, real and perceived.

A version of this editorial appeared in print on July 2, 2012, on page A14 of the New York edition with the headline: Crippled, Chaotic Pakistan.

To replace them by a new one.

Naik Mohammad replaced by Baitullah Mehsud and Baitullah mehsud replaced by Hakim ullah Mehsud. Simple.

Okay so I take your point that they (US) have more number of troops deployed in Iraq and less number of troops in Afghanistan.

May be because they thought that (in Afghanistan) Pakistan is there to fill the gap. They thought that you were their ally. They gave you money for the same reason. The point of the article is that you guys are not doing what you are supposed to be doing as per your duty of being an "ally". In fact you are doing exactly opposite of what you are supposed to be doing. Thus they call it the "Double Game."

Sometimes I think WOT is the best thing that could have happened to India. Pakistan is now too busy elsewhere to focus any attention towards destabalizing India or to interfere in Kashmir :)

. .
Written by an author that has only been in close proximity to the land he writes about when he was standing over a map. Pakistan has done more in this war than any other country, we man twice the number of border posts than the ISAF and maintain full vigilance, monitoring all movement through these isolated mountain passes. The ISAF has failed in their mandated mission and thus need excuses to cover their tracks after a hasty retreat. In Vietnam, it was Cambodia and look what happened, a peace-loving and benign community was radicalised to the point where things became a fair representation of a horror movie.

OH LORD enough of this! when the TTP issue came up they had to counter it with this nonsense!!

i am bored of this rhetorics from american media!

tell the US to contain the terrorist on the area of afghanistan their troops call "the dark side of the moon"!
