ISLAMABAD: The government is focused on improving economic engagements with its international partners instead of asking for assistance, said Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms Prof Ahsan Iqbal during a call on meeting with New Zealand’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Murray McCully here at the Planning Commission.
He said, “The new government is trying to translate cordial political relations with its international partners into a strong bilateral economic cooperation through joint ventures in business, trade and investment.”
On this occasion, the federal minister urged upon the government of New Zealand to cooperate with Pakistan in developing its hydel, dairy and agriculture sectors by bringing in value addition, as it is one of the seven focus areas of government’s Vision 2025 and 11th Five-Year Plan 2013-18.
He also expressed interest in New Zealand’s experience of revamping public sector institutions through governance reforms, and expressed desire of building linkages with higher education institutions in New Zeeland for sharing best training practices.
Prof Iqbal said, “Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif wants to put the economic growth of the country on a fast track by introducing performance culture in the public sector, because growing economy is the best solution to challenges like poverty, extremism and terrorism.” He added, “The government would also like to learn from New Zeeland’s experience in developing an effective regulatory mechanism in energy sector, because New Zealand is ahead in privatisation of GENCOs and DISCOs in the country.”
The federal minister explained, “Pakistan is located at a very strategic position in the region. The government is aggressively trying to exploit this great geographic potential by building North-South and East-West connectivity projects in partnership with China and CAREC. These regional connectivity infrastructure initiatives would make Pakistan hub of regional trade by integrating China, Central Asia and South Asia into a potential market of three billion people.” He added, “The economic policies of the government are attracting attention of global investors and Pakistan with a market of 180 million population offers great economic opportunities to both regional and international businessmen. Wall Street Journal in a recent article has appreciated the policies of the new government in winning over confidence of the business community.
The federal minister thanked the visiting New Zeeland foreign minister for his keen interest in developing better economic cooperation between the two countries, and asked the government of New Zealand to issue a positive business advisory of Pakistan for its businessmen. He also invited a working group of New Zealand to Pakistan to work on investment potential in hydel, textile and dairy farming sectors.
