ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has an identified hydropower potential of 60,000 MW, of which 40,000 MW is located on Indus Cascade starting from Skardu to Tarbela, Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Muhammad Asif said.
He said this during a briefing session arranged for political representatives and notables of the Indus Cascade area on social development schemes proposed by Wapda here Wednesday.
Khawaja Muhammad Asif said that projects of social and economic development were being given prime importance for improving the living standard of people living in areas of Indus Cascade.
Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Muhammad Yousuf,Minister of State for Water and Power, Ch.Abid Sher Ali ,Capt.(Rtd) Safdar MNA, Chairman Wapda,Zaffar Mehmood and parliamentarian of Kohistan area attended the meeting.
During the briefing it was told that amount of Rs.85092 million would be spent in development of communication infrastructure, power, education, and health sectors in the area of Indus Cascade.
It was also revealed that Wapda proposes to establish “Indus Cascade University” in which students of the area would be given preference in admission.
The sole purpose of the university is work for capacity building of students of the area so that suitable jobs could be offered to the local residents in power projects in the area.
These projects, on completion, would transform the socio-economic landscape of the area and bring about a major difference in the lives of the people.
Federal Minister for Water and Power said on the occasion that government remains committed to overcoming the crisis once and for all.
For this purpose,he said the government was working on various sources such as coal, LNG, solar and wind to augment power generation to bridge the gap between demand and supply.
He further added that according to WAPDA studies, Pakistan has an identified hydropower potential of 60,000 MW, of which 40,000 MW is located on Indus Cascade starting from Sakardu to Tarbela.
He also mentioned the enormous untapped potential of Indus Cascade offers a way out of worst energy crisis and charts a path for accelerated economic development of the regions where these projects are located.
At close of the session, Political representatives expressed satisfaction over launch of projects of social and economic development for better living standard of the people and thanked the concerned authorities for fulfilling corporate social responsibilities in letter and spirit.
