ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has assured Uzbekistan that it will support the Central Asian state in joining the Quadrilateral Traffic in Transit Agreement (QTTA) aimed at providing China and Central Asia access to Pakistani ports.

Uzbek Deputy Prime Minister Sardor Umurzakov requested Pakistan to support it in accession to the QTTA and share experience in achieving the GSP Plus status. In a conference call with Adviser to Prime Minister on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood, the two sides expressed the desire to enhance trade relations between the two countries. QTTA is an agreement between China, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan to facilitate transit traffic and trade related to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) aimed at providing China and Central Asia access to Pakistani ports.

It was resolved that all-out efforts would be made to enhance bilateral trade relations, establish joint ventures in the fields of agriculture, textile, pharmaceutical, tourism and construction.

It was also agreed to utilise institutions like the inter-governmental commission and the Joint Business Council for giving impetus to government-to-government and business-to-business cooperation. The Uzbek side expressed the desire to utilise Karachi and Gwadar Ports for trade operations and called for establishing a joint working group for trade and investment cooperation.

The commerce adviser apprised the Uzbek side that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for setting up Pakistan-Uzbekistan Joint Working Group on Trade and Investment would be ready for signing after approval from Pakistan’s cabinet.

Any proactive country manages its internal issues and external issues simultaneously.

There's no reason why Pakistan should put everything else on hold while wrapping up internal threats. This is a good development...CARs should be brought into CPEC as much as possible. The more the region becomes integrated in trade through CPEC the more important Pakistan becomes.

Finally! A directon... many of Pakistan's solutions lie in central Asia. It also allows bonding among populations that share faith and history.

Wouldn't transit via Afghanistan be faster than via China (ignoring the geopolitical issues)? Russian influence has generally kept the Central Asian countries away from closer links to southern Islamic countries (despite the historic connections). That may be changing since these nations are looking to develop further economically which requires ocean access plus Pakistan is trying to improve relations with Russia.

It would be great if we were to forge stronger ties with CARs, our need for energy could be satisfied as well having more friendlier nations is a bonus. We need to broaden our thinking, there are so many countries out there we can reach out to. Anyways, good development

Would you believe some Pakistanis even go to these countries for higher education whereas the situation should have been reverse. Nothing wrong with going far and wide to attain education as instructed by our Prophet (PBUH) but come on we need to have some level of our own atleast. We are 5th largest nation in the world and a nuclear power, atleast we should have some standing in Asia. The standard of higher education has actually fallen ever since the curse of 18th amendment was enacted.

Isn't it a folly of our constitution that a former ruler can be convicted of corruption and disqualified but all their previous actions when in power are not revisited. When a person wasn't loyal to the country how can you say that the legislation he spearheaded was to the benefit of the country.

They army looks after these matters and you are right they must focus on one time eliminating the miscreants and going after them in Afghanistan.
The reason they are not doing this is that maybe we are busy on too many fronts indian front keep us busy. And while at it we do not want to open another front. But this is long over due.
After all we have done operation in fata. Still there are some red areas left. How hard it is to completely eliminate this irritants.
The high ups may know better I hope.
But this is going on for far too long.

Not surprised as this was the Plan and purpose of CPEC anyways. The missing or incomplete bit is the cheapest form of goods transportation which is Railways. This CPEC railway corridor needs to be the priority. I am glad there is something going on in this respect but it really needs to be sped up.

India and Kabul Regime will definitely try to stop broader regional interconnection between CAR and Pakistan. Broader regional interconnection is in Afghanistan's interest as well but the morons in Kabul don't want to improve ties with Pakistan. Instead they plot against us in FATA and Baluchistan.

We know that they do this... Okay.

But what are we doing in return?
Federal government is setting up customs force, release money for fencing. But in the the total security of the two regions resides totally with the army. And these incidents keep on happening.
Something needs to be done. It not that difficult an issue.
