The total absence of space sciences from the curriculum, if not addressed, will continue to impede the progress of Pakistan’s space programme through dearth of quality human resource.

Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) Chairman Major General (retd) Ahmed Bilal shared this concern in an exclusive interview with The News. “Fascination with outer space starts at an early age which needs to be tapped through education and translated into learned professionals,” he said. Lack of funding was another reason, he cited as a drag-force in rapid progress in Pakistani space sciences.

He was of the view that Pakistan had lost its way somewhere in the middle after getting to a rather accelerated start. When it comes to space sciences, Pakistan’s initial learning curve was very steep as Suparco had its roots in the evolution phase of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States, he said.

There is so much that you’d want to know from a man who holds the position as Suparco chairman and the questions race your mind. The chairman, however, was “reluctant” to answer some questions. One couldn’t help but think that he isn’t sharing some really interesting and high-tech information. When asked where Pakistan stands in the defense satellite technology as compared with India and if Pakistan was working on a military satellite, he meticulously answered around it saying that there was nothing that Pakistan needed to worry about in the context.

Instead of saying much about the defence satellite he spoke more of the Remote Sensing Satellite which he believed Suparco will be able to launch by the next three years. Talking about the tremendous scope of the technology, he said that it would practically prove as a new world regarding the way we approach our geology, agriculture, topography, hydrology and other areas.

He termed the recent project of the Student Satellite initiated by Suparco as a heartening step in the right direction which would indulge and engage the youth in space sciences and do wonders for the country.

He was of the view that the satellite would be complete and launched most probably before the Remote Sensing Satellite.

He was very excited about the fact that the nine complete-assemblies manufactured completely by S Suparco professionals for the PakSat-1R were working perfectly till now which proved its capacity and expertise.

He stressed laying down a precise national space-vision along which all efforts would be targeted. Identifying 1999 as the year when Suparco was once again recognised as a national asset, he said it had come a long way over the past years and 90 Pakistani space scientists were currently involved in a KHTT’ (Know How Training and. Transfer) programme with China.

The chairman praised the President of Pakistan for his support and project-friendly approach and believed that provided the same approach and harnessing of technology and human resource, Suparco would soon reach the heights it aims for.

When growing up when we had load sheding (we still do now... which is not the point) .. one thing you admired was the open sky sitting with your family members in night sky up in homes waiting for lights to arrive so you can go down stairs watch the mid night movie or other entertainment...

Well you could not resist but to admire the open skies in Pakistan , you can see the stars and whole sky

But I always wondered how come we don`t have a decent observatory telescopes for observing the stars and planets

Forget about the Astronomy as a course but even as hobby or ameture level there is not much support

Importance of Space Research:

a) Food preservation techniques
b) Health preservation techniques
c) Access to limitless potential of resources in Space
Example do you know that we have a moon in our solar system filled with (Hydrocarbons) a whole damn moon
d) How can you undermine space exploration is unimaginable

However with only 14 billion forex reserves , we can`t have space program which is the reality

^ You can buddy. You can certainly build satellites at relatively low cost. You missed the chance with NASA, you were ahead of India back in the early space days. There is another chance to kick start it with Chinese help. The have impressive space program. They can provide you big leap in this field with relatively less money.

People undermine the space technology. It saves billions of dollar worth to minimize destruction by floods, resource management, and not to forget the critical technology that gets diffused to industries.

The story of SUPARCO is a sad story of missed opportunities for Pakistanis. Established in 1961 by Ayub Khan on advice of a great Pakistani named Abdus Salam ( Pakistan's only nobel laureate ) , it made great strides in the earlier days. but then it became a victim of Budget cuts.

.
Well untill Pakistan cannot have 300-400 Billion in Forex reserves we can`t have a meaningful space program , may be ameture level telescopes and observatories

Suparco is very much active and kicking...
They are short in budget but whatever little they get they are making the most of it...

Not only space, Pakistan unfortunately missed on thousands of other opportunities to improve it's own economy and well being of it's citizens. Our only bad luck rather bad decision has been to choose corrupt leadership one after the other. As Pakistani nation, we only have to blame but ourselves.

There is no shortage of talent or passion in this nation, but we needto set our priorities right. We have to rise above the cast and sect divide and take collective decissions for the collective good. We have been claiming ourselves to be muslims and Pakistanis, now we have to become one in true spirit.

and unfortunately it's all wishful thinking, I know its not gonna happen.
