Pakistan fails to achieve mango export target
KARACHI: Pakistan failed to achieve its mango export target of 1.5 million tons, due to logistics issues and barriers in export to Iran, said Waheed Ahmed, chairman of All Pakistan Fruit and Vegetables Importers, Exporters and Merchants Association on Friday.
Pakistan could have earned $50 million by achieving the target. However, it earned only $39 million from mango exports, he said. He added that around 90 percent exports took place through the sea, while mango production also declined by 35 percent this year.
Ahmed said that the logistics issue was the major reason for decline in mango exports, which included hurdles created by non-Pakistani shipping companies and 100 percent checking of consignments by the Anti-Narcotics Force in the name of searching for drug smuggling.
International barriers on trade with Iran also declined Pakistans exports to that country, as Pakistani banks have stopped trade services with Iran, which imported 30,000 tons of mangoes from Pakistan every year, he said. The country has suffered a loss of $10 million for not exporting mangoes to Iran, he added. Besides, mango exports on commercial basis to the US could not take place due to the condition of treating the mangoes at a radiation plant near Chicago and unavailability of air service. Similarly, commercial exports to Japan did not take place because the VHT plant was not established during the season. Exports to Australia and China also could not begin because of logistics issue.
Ahmed said that they would focus on exports to Japan, Australia, South Korea, the US, Mauritius and Lebanon markets and initiatives would be taken to uplift the quality of Pakistani mangoes to increase exports.
