Kamra No.5

The 10 day Drama Festival 2011 organised by the Pakistan National Council of the Arts and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting entered its second day with ‘Kamra No. 5’, a farce mingling facts and fiction. The play portrays the same chaos and confusion of present times having a stressful impact on our lives as we find it more and more difficult to separate facts from fiction in the live drama enacted before our eyes on the socio-political stage.

Written by Syed Imtiaz Ali Taj and directed by Tahir Siddiqui, the Islamabad Art Productions venture ‘Kamra No. 5’ is all about madness and mayhem in a slapstick package of laughter and suspense. The drama is enacted in a mental asylum with a number of mental patients from different backgrounds appear on stage with their interesting tales. The real suspense starts with the entry of an insurance agent, played by Baten Farooqui, mistakenly taking the room for a hotel.

A room full of mental patients giving loud and weird versions of their story is indeed a meaningful depiction of the bedlam and bewilderment emerging in public minds as they get bombarded everyday with different versions and distorted facts coming from all directions of our real life stage. The theory is that it’s not what one sees or hears, but what is being fed to them by various characters of the society in the name of facts. The best way to experience and relate this play to real life drama is perhaps is to see it on stage.

The cast of the play includes Imtiaz Ali Kashif, Sapna Shah, Saeed Anwar, Ismail Bashir, and Ayesh Khan, each fitted snugly to the roles given by their director.
