Pakistan dismisses reports about nuclear arms security concerns

(CNN) -- Pakistan on Saturday shrugged off reports that raised questions about the security of its nuclear weapons in light of recent political turmoil.

Analysts wonder how secure Pakistan's nuclear weapons would be if President Pervez Musharraf were replaced.

"Pakistan's strategic assets are completely safe and secure, and the highest level of institutionalized protection is accorded to them," the Foreign Ministry said in a news release.

It cited a spokesperson who "dismissed the concerns raised by certain inspired and tendentious reports in the Western media about the safety of Pakistan's strategic assets."

"Pakistan's command and control structures are not controlled by individual personalities but are institutionalized and multi-layered to ensure safety and security at multiple levels," the release said.

CNN reported Friday that U.S. military intelligence officials were urgently assessing how secure Pakistan's nuclear weapons would be if President Pervez Musharraf were replaced as the nation's leader.

The assessment is part of a broader review of the military and security situation in Pakistan.

Three U.S. sources have independently confirmed details of the intelligence review to CNN, but would not allow their names to be used because of the sensitivity of the matter. The sources include military officers and intelligence community analysts.

Officials say that Pakistan and its nuclear weapons are always a high intelligence priority for the United States.

The current review is a result of recent developments in that country, including the prospect that Musharraf could declare a national emergency that would give him sweeping powers.

Although the Pakistani government ruled out the emergency declaration Thursday, the three sources told CNN that the United States thinks Musharraf may still impose those measures. Watch a report on whether the U.S.-Pakistani alliance is in trouble »

On the issue of nuclear weapons control, the U.S. assessment is that currently, the United States has full knowledge of where Pakistan's nuclear weapons are located.

But the key questions, officials say, are what would happen and who would control the weapons in the hours after any change in government in case Musharraf were killed or overthrown.

Musharraf controls the loyalty of the commanders and senior officials in charge of the nuclear program, but those loyalties could shift at any point, officials say.

The United States is not certain who might start controlling nuclear launch codes and weapons if that shift in power were to happen.

According to the U.S. analysis, there is also a growing understanding that Musharraf's control over the military remains limited to certain top commanders and units, raising worries about whether he can maintain control over the long term.

U.S. analysts are watching current Pakistani troop movements closely to see whether Musharraf is making any moves that could indicate he is about to impose emergency measures. It appears that in recent weeks, a large number of troops left the Kashmir region to go to the tribal regions along the Afghan border, officials say.

The U.S. officials also say one of the key problems for the U.S. military is what restrictions on U.S.-Pakistani military cooperation could be imposed if Musharraf were to impose heavy security restrictions in his country.

The Foreign Ministry news release said the reports "have no basis and are apparently prompted by questionable motives."

"Pakistan's commitment to nuclear non-proliferation is strong and abiding. This commitment will be maintained despite the evident bias against our deterrent capability and our legitimate interest in development and access to civil nuclear energy for economic development."

Sorry attempts from the media to think about our nuclear weapons security. It is a freaking professional organization not some lallu mallu who have been given control of nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons protect us from eastern bully, and insures credible stability in the region including promoting peace.

The fact is that only two countires in the world have problem with our nuclear weapons, one and the formost is the USA and second is india. The rest of the world including russia and china are completely fine with it. As of india one can understand its because of the rivalary going on between the two sides, but US has no problems with pakistan, but a muslim country which posses nuclear weapons and this hulla huppa is created to make the american people afraid so that they can justify another war if it happens with pakistan.
I remember the same kind of BS started regarding iraq that it has weapons of massdestruction and they would be used against americans if we didnt acted now and look they torn the country apart and what did they find out nothing because there wasnt anything at the first place and now they have left the country in flames and now are trying to withdrawl their ***** out.The president has written in his own book that americans dont like the nuclear weapons of pakistan, how can they when afterall we are muslims, i doubt any policy is been made by the government to counter this threat because now it seems inevitable nomatter who the new government in US is, they will come after pakistan and the sooner we identify this threat the better we have the chances of survival.
God bless pakistan

I think Israel is also massively concerned about our nuclear arsenal. They are more and more becoming part of the equation in the south asia because they have become the second largest exporter of weapons systems to india after Russia and they are gravely concerned that establishment that till this point does not consider Israel a foe might start to change its position.

Perhaps but I consider isreal and US as one because every policy made in US has to some extent or should i say as a whole has jewish influence in it.

Screw everyone who thinks our nuclear weapons are under the control of one man.

Pakistan foriegn office must act strongly against this kind of propaganda. This looks a very deep routed conspiracy to destroy or take out the Pakistani nukes. It looks the West and other enemies of Islam and Muslims have gone far ahead and have planned to surround the Muslim nations and weakened them as much as possible before the final assault.

Get a life and come out of "Oh, we are victimized by xyz because we are muslim".

They are talking about Pakistan nuclear arsenal and not about bangladeshi. and whatever they (americans or pakistanis) do to pakistans arsenal has nada/zero/zilch to what happens in/to bangladesh. If the nuclear arsenal of Pakistan is attacked, it is because Pakistan (note not islam) did something which antagonises the other party.

and yes, the nuclear bomb while exploding doesnt care whether you have islam or not!!

LOL, don't try to teach me this ***** Indian or RSS version of the world politics. What you know is your mindset (mindset of a frog in a well) and you can't force it on others.
Islam doen't divides muslims in castes or sub castes. Those who recites shahada becomes brothern irrespective of their Nationality, Caste, Color and status etc. We think, as a Ummah our fate and future is same irrespective of the new God of "Nation" or "Watan"(In Allama Iqbal's word).
Again one more shair from the great poet of the east:
ek hi sab ka nabi deen bhi iman bhi ek
harame paak bhi Allah bhi Quran bhi ek
kuchh bari baat thi hote jo Musalman bhi ek

So you believe that the nuclear arsenal are not of Pakistan but of islam. k.

I wont argue with that, reason- no use.

I beg to differ. AQ Khan is already tagged the nuclear rogue who sold secrets for a few dollars more. This "freaking professional organization" could do nothing about it even under normal chain of command. With mushy gone and an even crankier chap at the helm, I wouldn't bet against nuclear terrorism originating from pakistan (i don't mean the govt. but miscreants in pak)
