ISLAMABAD: Following the death of a Pakistani prisoner in a prison in occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan has demanded of India to release on humanitarian grounds all such prisoners who have completed their sentences, foreign office spokesperson Tasneem Aslam told Dawn on Saturday.

A Pakistani prisoner, Shaukat Ali, who was arrested by authorities in India for trespassing more than two years ago, was found hanging inside a jail in Indian Kashmir on Friday.

Shaukat Ali, 42, a resident of Sialkot in Pakistan, had been lodged in a jail in Amphala, about 300 kilometers from the region’s main city of Srinagar, since December 2011.

Pakistan's High Commissioner in India Salman Bashir has contacted Indian authorities to get a detailed report about the death of the Pakistani prisoner.

“Yes, I heard about this incident through the media and we are now in contact with Indian authorities to get more details,” Bashir told Dawn via telephone from New Delhi.

Shaukat was arrested on charges of illegally crossing the de facto border between the two countries.

Foreign office spokesperson Tasneem Aslam told Dawn that Islamabad has demanded that all of its prisoners who have completed their actual sentences should be released on humanitarian grounds.

“We have asked our high commission in India to furnish us with more details about the incident,” the spokesperson said.

She expressed concerned over the plight of Pakistani prisoners in India and claimed that they face so much torture at the hands of Indian authorities that either they lose their senses or commit suicide.

According to Pakistani diplomats based in New Delhi, Indian officials assured Pakistani officials that the incident would be investigated by a magistrate and, after completion of formalities the body of the prisoner would be handed over to Pakistani authorities.

Last May, a Pakistani prisoner died of his injuries after he was savagely beaten by fellow convicts in another jail in Indian Kashmir, leading to calls for an international probe into his death.

His death followed a similar assault on Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat jail. A high profile convict, Singh had been on the death row for more than 21 years.

Hypocrites who...Better look in your own backyard before pointing fingers at others..

Do tell me how many Pakistani Prisoners are released in the same period..

When a suitable and conducive environment is established between two countries the innocent prisoners will be released. But it can happen only after a through background check of each individual. India doesn't have any interest in holding any innocent citizens back.

Hope the same happens from other end too.

S..!!s like you don't have any ideas. There is difference between convicted prisoner and fishermens.

And I certainly not believe what your propaganda media sprouts.

Really? undemarcated since when? what the fork is the GPS for? i posted a lenghty article on the issue...

If only those fishermen could afford GPS...
Though it is the fault of govt for not providing them with one.

Still the comparison of crossing maritime border and land border is different, given the Indo-Pakistani land borders are very clearly demarcated, while no such thing possible for sea.

Ok give me the figures of Pakistani Fishermen released in that period...

We are not talking about fishermen and prisoners but the kameena pan of your side of holding many Pakistani's without charges or trial and then systematically Killing them in your dungeons...

P:S...Fishermen are also prisoners because they violate the law of the state and hence kept in prisons..

I cannot provide data for any period you wish but this is the latest news I found .

According to Indian fishermen activists, at present around 229 Indian fishermen and about 780 Indian boats are in the custody of Pakistan. In addition to this, 23 boats of Indian fishermen had been confiscated just during the ongoing fishing season.

Similarly around 200 Pakistani fishermen with 150 boats were with India, they added.

The same kameena pan is also shown by your side and this whole episode started because of the death of Sarabjit Singh in Pak jail .
