Pakistan deadliest country for journalists: Report

ISLAMABAD: A press advocacy group says Pakistan was the deadliest country for journalists in 2010, with at least eight members of the media killed in the country in connection with their work.

The Committee to Protect Journalists says in its year-end analysis that the 42 journalists killed worldwide in 2010 was down from the record 72 who were killed in 2009.

Still the group said the number was ”unacceptably high and reflective of the pervasive violence journalists confront.”

The report released Wednesday said six of the journalists killed in Pakistan died in suicide attacks.

It said a greater proportion of journalists was killed in suicide attacks and crossfire while on assignment worldwide in 2010 than in years past. It said Iraq was the second deadliest country for journalists, with four deaths.

But its not governments fault

I think Pakistan suffered highest number of suicide attack in recent years so higher number of causalities are obvious

obviously if Journalist visit red zone areas, such as FATA, then who's gona protect them,

if some civilian enters a active battlefield, how can he survive??

They have to sign a form saying they go to those areas by their own risk I saw a documentary on national geographic where a Pakistani army person gave the lady Journalist a waiver to sign b4 she embarked on her tour alongside the Pakistani military in NWFP

Okay ermmm don't mess with us CNN you lying pr**ks?

Do you even know that just in last few days two journalists were killed by terrorists in Balochistan.

A week back or so two of our colleagues were killed in FATA by terrorists in a suicide attack on a jirga of tribesmen who were against the TTP terrorists.

well military is not responsible for protecting us because we often like go break the rules and dont want to embed.

besides as far as own risks, well journalists here have no security of job and they can not just refuse to go to troubled areas and indeed we are going on our own risks.

Are you a Journalist Jana have u ever had to sign a waiver form out of interest?

.
well it might be only for true journalists and not someone who keeps a blog and claims to be a journalist...

obviously they give them the permission and they go by there own risk, but when they die, Pakistan becomes the most deadliest country for journalists,

If they go by there on risk then they shouldn't be counted in this report

Even ahead of Afganistan?

I am afraid YES. in Afghanistan most of the journalists currently are attached to one or other western media outlet or NGOs or such arrangement. often majority are suppose to toe their line so mainly opinion

Many areas are Taliban dominated so they hardly will go there besides there are some good security and monitoring apparatus put by the western, American private organisations wherein its easy to track the journalists in case of missing.

Many indeed there too are in red zones carry life risks while covering and its also one of the difficult to work there in media
