Report: Pakistan continues to rely on the US and China for defence imports

Pakistan, the world’s fifth biggest importer of arms, continues to rely on the US and China to acquire the majority of its weapons, says a report by Strategic Defence Intelligence (SDI).

Titled ‘Future of the Pakistani Defense Industry-Market Attractiveness, Competitive Landscape and Forecasts to 2022’, the report outlines the current and future trends of the Pakistani defence industry.

The nation’s indigenous defence manufacturing industry supplies the majority of the low and mid-market technology systems but possesses limited capabilities to meet the country’s requirements for advanced defence systems. Pakistan, as a result, largely relies on technologically advanced countries such as the US and China for arms imports.

China was the country's primary arms supplier from 2012 to 2016, while they also signed agreements with the US for the procurement of F-16 fighters, AH-1Z Cobra attack helicopters and missiles, states the report.

"China was the country's primary arms supplier from 2012 to 2016, while they also signed agreements with the US for the procurement of F-16 fighters, AH-1Z Cobra attack helicopters and missiles."
Arms exports from Pakistan are, however, anticipated to grow over the next five years as the nation begins to develop state-of-the-art defence systems such as battle tanks, trainers, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and missile operations.

Pakistan allows foreign firms to enter its defence market through foreign military sales (FMS) and joint venture (JV) agreements. Unstable political and social conditions, as well as widespread corruption in the defence procurement programmes, however, make the industry unattractive for foreign original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), adds the report.

I foresee F-16s being replaced with JF-17s and AH-1Zs replaced by Mi-28s.

:o:, do they come here n try to project a better image of themselves, enough with ur 'pleasing the colonial' master mentality, f uck them, we dont need to prove anything to anyone, they partner up with our regional enemies and try to break up pakistan and "we" should present a better image of ourselves?? I guess dignity and self respect arent taught but inhereted n u my friend were lazing around in bed the day it was bieng distributed, Its them that need to work on image building not us, "project a better image" ka bacha, anyways we wont need them anymore when it comes to defence tech, china can provide everything at par with them now so again f uck those treacharous yanks...

Its not called relying.its called give and take.Pakistan buys arms and weapons, dont get them as a gift so if USA isnt intrested in selling there are plenty of other options.might not be as same as USA.but Pakistan always consider what is neccessary.

When pakistan will be having missile shield , icbm , nuclear submarine , air craft carrier ?
All of those except an Aircraft Carrier are do-able for Pakistan in the future, I won't be surprised if Pakistan announces one of these projects in the next year or so. However, Pakistan will not go for an Aircraft Carrier as it is not needed - we have a 'small' coastline and no territory overseas, hence we do not need an Aircraft Carrier.

A good image is of paramount importance in world affairs, here we are only talking about attracting foreign investments, but it goes much beyond that, it is a business attire, if you like to see it that way.. And it doesn't have anything to do with dignity my friend, everyone is responsible for his own dignity and self-respect.. those are different matters altogether.. Remember that China is also working on bettering Pakistan's image both for its own investors as well as for others..

missile shield ? HQ-9 is believed to be in service but its just rumors for nwo
ICBM ? not needed for now, better work on MIRV's
Nuclear Submarine ? under-development
Air craft Carrier ? Not needed for time been

all of these things require money which we don't have .. so it will be a slow pace

If Sweden can be self-sufficient in defense, Pakistan can too. It will take a substantial investment in resources to do it, but it's possible. But Sweden is also a major exporter of arms, if Pakistan can do the same, it will be even better.

1. I would like to have a long range SAM network installed all over Pak where needed.
2. As an alternate for aircraft carrier, PN should have its own (owned and operated by PN) aviation wing comprising of at least 40 to 60 fighter aircraft equipped with anti-ship missiles (to sink a frigate/destroyer/carrier), BVRs and CMs. This would free up PAF and they would be able to concentrate on securing the sky and providing aerial support to the army.
3. If PN can be equipped with a large number of surface vessel, i.e. frigates and destroyers 8 of each.
4. Increase the submarine fleet to 20 including 6 nuclear (it is expensive option but, this will secure the coastline of Pakistan.
5. Increase the number of fast attack missile boats to 30 to 40. Four sea mine detecting vessel so PN has a large coverage to keep Pakistani sea clear of mines.

The above is going to be very expensive, however, it would make a naval blockade impossible and even if the enemy outlines a plan for such, it would not be possible without paying an extremely heavy price. Having a strong navy is extremely critical for this 21 century. Right now, I have doubt PN can make a significant difference when put against IN.
