Pakistan on day blamed India for its exclusion from the ‘SAARC Satellite’ project, saying New Delhi was not willing to develop the venture on a collaborative basis. Pakistan’s claim came on a day when India successfully launched the ‘South Asia Satellite’ to provide communications and disaster support to neighbouring countries.

“During the 18th SAARC Summit, India offered to ‘gift’ a satellite to SAARC member states, to be named as the so-called ‘SAARC Satellite’. Subsequently, however, India made it clear that it would build, launch and operate the satellite solely,” Pakistan Foreign Office Spokesperson Nafees Zakaria said.

However, its registration with International Telecommunication Union (ITU) was to be done as a ‘SAARC Satellite’, he said

Zakaria claimed that Pakistan, which has its own space programme at an advanced level, was ready to share its expertise and technological know-how and was keen to participate in the project.

“However, as India was not willing to develop the project on a collaborative basis, it was not possible for Pakistan to support it as a regional project under the umbrella of SAARC. The Satellite was then renamed as ‘South Asia Satellite’ as the project was taken out of the SAARC ambit,” he said.

Seven of the eight SAARC countries — India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Maldives — are part of the ambitious project.

Giving a fillip to India’s new age space diplomacy and “neighbourhood first” policy, the Rs 235 crore satellite GSAT-9 built as part of a Rs 450 crore project and touted as an ‘invaluable gift’ to India’s neighbours is seen as a significant move in countering Chinese interests in the region. The project is funded entirely by India.

The cuboid-shaped 2,230 kg satellite named SAS will enable a full range of services to the neighbours, including in telecommunication, television, direct-to-home, VSATs, tele-education and telemedicine. The South Asian Satellite (SAS) mission life is 12 years.

It's like saying Russia build, launch and operate satellite solely and call it "gift" for UN security council nations. Will US and other security council nations accept it?:woot::lol:

How absurd does this sound...why would Pakistan let india build and operate a satellite?, who knows what devices are installed in it that could be gathering Intel on Pakistan.

we will keep fighting forever.india is way ahead in space engineering.we should accept good things of our enemy.they already made ICBM and it was easy for them to develop satellites.pakistan must follow the foot steps of india.despite hostilities,we must encourage our enemy to do positive things.similarly they can encourage us.

You do understand what Pakistan uplinks/downlinks to/from the satellite is completely within its control?

Anyway every other SAARC country has signed up for the project, if you dont want in, no one cares. Seriously don't understand why Pakistan is even bringing up this subject....did some feelings get hurt?

The ground receivers are the responsibilty of individual countries.

Lol i spilled my tea laughing:lol:

SAARC isn't a space organisation , why did the Pakistanis think we will give them our secrets of ISRO one our most successful programs.

You do know every major power that has its space program, has military satellites, and this kind of weather and comm satellite won't suffice for "spying purposes."

Secondly, regarding your analogy. If Russia does build a satellite and 149 nations accept it, and only one nation does not. Then your argument fails. In this case, seven others accepted it. Btw, you have the right not to accept it.

Since I'm a voracious reader of what happens in your regions, I remember reading an article that spoke about "putting up hurdles" ALA Pakistan always objecting to multinational projects by not allowing consensus in SARC i.e. typically all of the remaining countries in SARC agree to projects, and Pakistan is always the sole one to object; thereby killing it since everything is consensus driven in SARC- just like the U.N security council

He does not understand that that each SAARC nation got their own dedicated Ku band transponders. I really ponder what drives the mentality of these noobs? god forbid they actually grasp the technology, the comedy will all but disappear.

Uplinks\down-links stop confusing the poor guys.

Even now they can put devices which can spy on Pakistan.

Seriously you tell me what kind of help can Pakistan give in building and launching of satellite. We can all agree that India's space program is miles ahead of Pakistan's

LOL

I found that to be quite humorous also. One of the members here is adamant NUST and LUMS are better than IIT. Perhaps that's his real identity?
