Pakistan begins making first ‘Islamic’ fighter jet

DUBAI: Pakistan has started indigenous production of JF-17 Thunder — billed as the Islamic world’s first fighter jet — which will be inducted into the Pakistan Air Force by December, 2006. “We are ready to export the aircraft to friendly countries, especially the Arab states,” disclosed Air Marshal Aurangzeb Khan, Chairman of Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) Board, in an interview with Khaleej Times, at the conclusion of the Dubai 2005 Air Show. He said that the fighter jet, JF-17 Thunder, was expected to be on static display and also take part in aerobatics at the Dubai 2007 Air Show. “The manufacturing of all-weather JF-17 Thunder, a multi-role and light weight fighter aircraft, marks a significant milestone towards technological advancement by the PAC,” Khan said. “This initiative by an under-developed country like Pakistan needs to be encouraged so that we are able to help our friends,” he added. He said that the PAC has co-ventured with CATIC of China on the development and production of the JF-17 Thunder whose prototype is flying. “At the PAC in Kamra, Pakistan, we are doing 58 per cent of the airframe and majority of the avionics in addition to stuffing, final assembling and flight testing,” Khan said. agencies

Air frame and doing avionics stuff shouldn't be hard for PAC, as PAC already have experience with it, more stuff needs to be done for advancing the aviation field.

Where is the Iranian Figher???they also have an indigous fighter, thunder isant an indugous fighter although Pakistan can export it to any country which it wants to but its with the Chineese collabration.

Yeah, i remember reading about the indeginious fighter of Iran, but it was way down the line. I remember people making fun of that fighter, because its air frame was very unstable, and looked very weird.

Here is the some information regarding Iran's first fighter, and in my opinoin maybe the first Islamic fighter jet. It was claimed to be successfully designed in 1997, but the aircraft lacks the modern equipment and is very vulnerable to advanced fighters like F-16s, F-15s, etc.

Also Egypt should be the first muslim country to design the first supersonic indegnious fighter with the help of Germans in 1962. It created three prototypes of supersonic indegnious, but sadly those aircrafts were never put into the operational use.

Iran was not known to have possessed advanced technology to build fighter planes or tanks. However, In April 1997 Iranian Brigadier General Arasteh, a deputy head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces (serving under Major General Ali Shahbazi, the joint chief of staff) claimed that Iran had successfully designed, constructed, and tested its first fighter aircraft, the Azarakhsh(Lightning). According to one theory, Iran cobbled together an aircraft by reverse-engineered elements from a number of other aircraft. Reportedly either similar to the F-4 or derivative from the F-5, this Iranian design evolved from an examination of the wide variety of fighter aircraft in Iran's inventory [which include both the F-4 and F-5], along with training and experimentation. Brigadier General Arasteh stated in April 1997 that the "production line of this aircraft will begin work in the near future." And Iranian officials announced in September 1997 that Iran had started mass producing its first locally-designed fighter-bomber.
There are also reports of the development of another indigenous fighter design called the Owj (Zenith). Iran's Defense Industries Organization has announced plans for the production of the propeller-driven Parastu (Swallow) and jet-powered Dorna (Lark) training aircraft, and there are also claims of the testing of the first Iranian-designed helicopter. In April 1997 Acting Commander of the Ground Forces of the Iranian Army, Lieutenant General Mohammad Reza Ashtiani announced that the design and construction of helicopters has started and will bear results in the ground forces five-year plan. General Ashtiani also claimed that 14,000 various kinds of aircraft parts have been produced by the forces, with some of the parts manufactured at costs one thousandths of similar foreign made parts. He stated that Iran had saved the equivalent of 30 billion rials in hard currency. In the Iranian budget year which started on March 21, he disclosed that the aviation wing of the army intended to produce 90 percent of its spare parts requirement.
