Pakistan becoming politically, economically insignificant: PEW

Islamabad: The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday said economy of the country is going down by the passage of every day which calls for urgent and decisive actions by the government.

Incompetent leadership and policies without logical or meaningful connection have left country astray while preserving credibility has become a big challenge for the government, it said.

Doubts, uncertainty, panic and pain has become part of the life for commoners as well as business community, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.

Loss of confidence is a very serious issue taken lightly by the politicians while the experience shows that it is impossible for a country to regain the faith of market once lost.

To avoid such an outcome, our leaders must act boldly and swiftly through parliament to boost anaemic growth rate, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal.

Islamabad urgently needs to send a clear message to convince international community and investors that government is now serious to introduce radical structural reforms.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that unpopular reforms will take time to produce results but will restore the market’s confidence which is dwindling due to impression that rulers are willing to risk everything to prolong rule and protect personal wealth.

Dr. Mughal said that current circumstances are leading country towards unsustainability raising serious challenges to our independence.

In this scenario, economic sustainability should be on the top of the government’s agenda as plunging into political and economic insignificance may leave Pakistan with no option but to accept Indian dominance, he warned.

This has been said from day one about Pakistan, yet the doubters have always been proven wrong. While the government is inept to say the least, the regular citizens in Pakistan themselves take initiative to take the country forward.

Until this failed government doesn't change we aren't going to see progress in anything

rulers are willing to risk everything to prolong rule and protect personal wealth.

This here pretty much sums it up and this is exactly why 1000s of people have left Pakistan or are leaving with their knowledge or wealth.

Carry forward?

More than 60 years and still we are struggling for basic necessities.

The thing I've noticed amongst Pakistanis is, they always think they have/are the worst in everything, & have an innate tendency to put themselves down, & resort to all sorts of cynicisms & conspiracy theories, which only puts themselves down further. Having traveled extensively in Latin America, Africa, & other parts of the world, I realized their assumptions are totally wrong. Is there need for improvements in every area of Pakistan? YESSS!!!! Does Pakistan have the worst (or even close to the worst) in everything? Hell NO!!! Pakistan is somewhere in 'the middle in the world' (in social, economic terms).

Stick to the topic please.

Indians and Pakistanis don't have to drag in India into every discussion

Don't blame your govt for everything. They aren't responsible for half the actions that are taken in Pakistan.

If you continue blaming your Govt when the real power lies elsewhere democracy will not mature and you will be stuck with your dictators.

It took us nearly 45 years for the democracy to mature.Give them time. They not only have to 'do' many things, but also 'undo' many things of the past.

And yes if militancy and the religious extremism continues Pakistan will soon become an economic basket case if it not one already..

Exactly right - I have visited many countries in the world and outside a few in the west, Pakistan is better than most.

This is unreasonable pessimism.
This is probably for domestic consumption.

Economics was never what the PPP was about -- the PPP operates on populism while her "politicians raid the treasury and friends of politicians line up for government contracts.

Actaully this is pretty much all political parties in Pakistan - and this is primarily because these are anti-national parties, by this I mean their first concern, other than the enrichment of themselves and their families, is parochial - they sustain themselves, as you can see in every major urban center, by turning ethnic and linguistic, and confessional groups against each other, and in this way, keep themselves unaccountable - can this last?? Sure it can.

Technocrats in the finance, commerce and state bank cannot be expected to deliver when they are subject to the interests and nepotism of politicians.

Seems to be inherent to all the countries in the Sub-Continent. But that is what drives people here to build a better country. There's nothing wrong with wanting your country to have the best facilities and infrastructure. This sort of criticism is the only way to drive the politicians to do something.
