LOS ANGELES (Web Desk) – Pakistan has won its first Special Olympics gold medal in the swimming category at Uytengsu Aquatics Centre in Southern California.

Pakistan special Olympian, Asim Zar won the gold medal in 100 meter freestyle swimming competition in Special Olympics 2015 games, reported The News.


The 27-year-old Olympian had won several laurels for the country.

Zar also won the Special Olympics Summer Games in Division M14 of the swimming final. However, he was later disqualified for unknown reasons and Jamaica’s Jonathan Lowe was awarded the gold.

He was also a star athlete at the Special Olympics 2007 in China, bagging two silver medals in 400 metre race and long jump.


The Special Olympics World Games 2015 is going on in the Los Angeles, US.

Pakistani special players are taking part in nine sports categories, including athletics, swimming, football, basketball, tennis, table tennis, power lifting and cycling.

Mahfooz Ilahi is the head of delegation and Asma Hasan is deputy head. As many as 7000 athletes from 177 countries are joining the mega event.

LOS ANGLES – Special athletes of Pakistan bagged five medals on Wednesday in the ongoing Special Olympics World Games 2015 being staged at Los Angles.


Pakistani athlete bagged one silver medal in swimming, two silvers in cycling and two cyclists also grabbed one bronze medal each. Young Special Olympian Aqsa Ahmed Janjua brought the first medal to Pakistan in 50 meter free style. The gold medalist of this event was Luo Xiau Chun of China, with 55.90 timing whereas third position was captured by Skrij Ema of Slovenia, with 58.61 timing.

Mehmona Hussain won the first silver in 500 meter race of female cycling race. Her time was 1.15.72, she was fractionally behind Indian competitor Meera Kumari whose timing was 1.14.58. In another 500 meter time and trial race Khadija Irfan won second silver for Pakistan, her timing was 2.23.44.

Salman Siddiqui and Usman Saeed bagged bronze in 500 meter time and trial cycle race to complete the day with two silvers and two bronze for home. Uzma Yousuf and Sumbal Yousuf finished eighth (last position) in same time and trial cycle races.


– Pakistan defeat Portugal –

In basketball, Pakistan defeated Portugal by 23-10 in the first round robin match of Division 3. Other two teams in this group are Israel and Poland. Special Olympian Muhammad Usman was unstoppable during the match and remained top scorer and earned decisive 12 points. Akhtar Ali Khatak bagged 2 points, Zahid Muhammed Abuzar 4 points and Waheedur Rehman 5 points.

LOS ANGELES: Pakistan raised their medals count in the Special Olympics 2015 to 23 as athletes continue to win more competitions, ARY News reports.

Tauseef Hassan bagged the gold medal in 10 kilometre cycling.

Asim Zar, who won the gold medal in the 100 metre freestyle swimming, clinched the second place in 50 metre freestyle event.

Anwar Ahsan won two gold medals in tennis level 4.

Saira Ikram won the silver medal in 100 metre athletics.

Azhar Marvi clinched the bronze medal in 400 metres run while Mehmona Hussain also came third in the Cycling 1,000 kilometre time trial event.

Iqbal Jahanzaib won two gold medals in Badminton singles events.

Khadija Irfan won the silver and bronze medal in 500 metre time trial and 1,000 kilometre cycling respectively.

Ramail Irshad won the gold medal in 200 metre athletics while Aqsa Ahmed Janjua bagged gold in 50 metre backstroke swimming.

Mahammad Qayyum clinched the gold medals in Tennis Doubles as well.
