I understand, but if Pakistan makes a rash decision and does a preemptive attack, there's no telling the repercussions it'll have,

The four rightly guided Khalifas didn't start the wars with the byzatines and the Sassanids, they were steadfast in preventing bloodshed but were forced to defend their people when the two superpowers started harrassing them.

The Great Salah-ud-din didn't aggressively attack the crusader states even though he knew he would have won, he hated Warfare and bloodshed. He was a scholar and wanted to be a darvish, but he waited patiently until the crusaders broke the treaty and killed Innocents, and then he defended the people.

We have to learn from their actions

But history books would always write that India started it. Why it was even needed if we capture even a part of kashmir. What does it matter even if they or we start?
This is the common reaction of people like us...
But the reality is that even after capturing any area you need to hold it. You can hold it international support and your army. Even international Community not sanctioning you and accepting your pov is everything.
We cannot start a fight on a whim but we can end it with the style.

how does the government in New Delhi justify claiming a region where the inhabitants of that said region are aggressively against being part of the state of India, and i'm referring to Gilgit-Baltistan. how do indians justify that?
you don't have a greater claim to that land than the people living in that land.
