WANA: The Pakistan Army and Ahmadzai Wazir tribal elders on Thursday agreed to work together to maintain peace in South Waziristan and said they would never allow the militants to use the tribal region for terrorist activities in future.
The pledge was made at a meeting of 140-member Ahmadzai Wazir tribal Jirga and military officials led by General Officer Commanding for South Waziristan Maj Gen Rizwan Akhtar. Political Agent Javed Marwat and Assistant Political Agent Wana Mohammad Shoaib Khan were also present.
Tribal elders, including Malik Noor Ali Wazir, Malik Khanzada Wazir and Malik Mohammad Ali Tojikhel, spoke on the occasion and assured the government and military authorities of their support in maintaining peace and keeping the terrorists at bay from their militancy-hit tribal region.
Maj-Gen Rizwan lauded the efforts and sacrifices rendered by the Ahmadzai Wazir tribesmen for the restoration of peace to the tribal region and urged them to play their role in purging the area of terrorists.
He said the government and military had launched mega development works for welfare and prosperity of the tribesmen in South Waziristan and would never allow a handful of elements to create hurdles in completion of these projects. The military official said the Pakistan Army and political administration were working side by side for development of the area and to rid it of militants. We will never hesitate from any kind of sacrifice if someone tried to create any law and order issue here, he vowed.
He also thanked the political administration for opening the main Rustam Adda bazaar in Wana, comprising 10,000 shops and markets, after remaining closed for two weeks. The shops and markets were closed for two weeks as a punitive action against the Ahmadzai Wazir tribesmen by the government after unknown people fired rockets at a roadside military checkpoint and killed a Pakistan Army soldier and injured two others.
Besides closing the markets and commercial centres, the authorities had also closed the roads for general traffic that caused hardships to the tribesmen, who approached the government for talks.
Also, the administration had imposed a fine of Rs5 million on Ahmadzai Wazirs for their alleged failure to protect their soil from being used against the state and law-enforcement agencies. The two sides have now agreed to follow the 2007 peace accord in letter and spirit and promised to work together in future as well.
