It's time we mined the border and said you know what, "we're now neutral".

It's your War, deal with it!

Bomb attacks that are killing British troops in Afghanistan are being funded and supplied from Iran and Pakistan, a senior officer has said.

Major General Gordon Messenger also revealed that Taliban insurgents are altering their tactics to launch more long-range sniper attacks on Nato forces.

A total of 309 British personnel have died in Afghanistan sine 2001. Many have been killed by improvised explosive devices, bombs planted along roads and pathways

The general, the spokesman for Britain’s mission in Afghanistan, said that UK forces and Afghan civilians now face an “unprecedented threat” from such devices.

Maj Gen Messenger told reporters in London that British military intelligence has found “evidence” that some of the IED attacks are being supported from outside Afghanistan.

“We are looking beyond Afghanistan in terms of the provision of some of the more sophisticated components and the provision of finance,” he said. “There is evidence that something is coming in from Iran, something is coming in from Pakistan.”

Some reports have suggested that military chiefs and intelligence agencies in both Pakistan and Iran are supporting the Taliban.

Last month, a London School of Economics report said that Pakistan’s ISI intelligence service gives extensive backing to the Afghan insurgency.

I think these foreign forces should accept their defeat in Afghanistan and try to correct the mistakes they have committed in the past few years instead of blaming Pakistan for their defeat.

:)

Pol Pot killed 2.5 million Cambodians from 1975-79, or about 21% of the population. When Vietnam took him out in '79, three countries supported him: Russia and China, due to their communist ties, and US, wanting to get back at Vietnam due to a unsuccessful mission there.

Breaking news: Intelligence Agencies due whats in the best interest of their countries!!! Or just revenge, sometimes.

Maybe Pakistan should do the same ? No? Then NATO should keep the pressure on the Taliban till the ANA comes to full power. It will be good for everyone.

Why on earth would anyone want the Taliban to win and reform in Afghanistan.

Wishful thinking.

By the way, how do you "Speculate" on dealing with the war being waged INSIDE Pakistan?

I don't think there are many Pakistanis outside of the fringe religious nuts who want to see the Talibans win. I once saw an article that in Pakistan the so-called Islamist parties win the lowest percentage of votes in entire the Muslim world. Says enough about it.

Media hype and hyperbole aside, even in the mid 90s the Talibans did not have many friends in common Pakistanis. I remember when the Talibans had shaved the heads of Pakistani soccer team--an 'honored guest' in highest Afghan/Muslim/Pashtun tradition--for wearing short-pants (or was it mere t-shirts?). Whole Pakistani nation was enraged and disgusted with the Talibans. Not to mention when these Talibans demolished the Bamiyan Bhudda statues and the disgust it aroused in Pakistan.

However, Pakistan's strategic planners are extremely worried that any major Indian influence in Afghanistan will be just too much for Pakistan. Up to 9/11, Pakistan's very long western borders were secure and to a military commander that is a huge deal. Now they are not.

So, is it a Faustian Bargain? Yes. But the alternative is a Faustian Bargain++.

this is the actual statement. and its no secret. while he should also have mentioned gulf states and NATO/ISAF (which gives taliban protection money).

Its sad that Pakistanis still think that peace will return if we went 'neutral' & ISAF loosing in Afghanistan will be good
