With the installation of a modern radar system at key international airports, Pakistan’s aviation sector has achieved another key milestone under the vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Mode S is a Secondary Surveillance Radar that is capable of selective interrogation of aircraft based on unique 24-bit addresses assigned to each aircraft.

The recent development is a key feature of Air Navigation Plan 2025 approved earlier by PM Imran Khan. Under the Air Navigation Plan 2025, 2 Mode S radar systems are installed at Islamabad International Airport and 4 at Jinnah International Airport, Karachi. This is in response to increasing air traffic in major cities around in Pakistan.

Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is expecting a 25 to 30% increase in revenue of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) after the completion of Air Navigation Plan 2025. PIA has increased the number of flights to key destinations around the globe including Europe, Canada, and Gulf countries.

Under the Air Navigation Plan, control towers of airports across the country will be equipped with modern equipment and technology.

Moreover, the development of new airports at key destinations, construction of new runways at existing airports, and reconciling infrastructure with international standards are other important features of the plan. Mode S radar systems will also installed at more airports in the future.

Civil Aviation Authority holds a key role in promoting tourism in the country. In this regard, the foundation stone of a new state of the art airport at Gwadar was laid earlier this year.

Flights to some of the major destinations in the UK and Europe had been resumed since PM Khan has assumed the office. Earlier this year, British Airways also resumed its flight operations in Pakistan after a decade as British Airways’ Boeing 787 Dreamliner landed at Islamabad International Airport.
