ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday accused India of exceeding its legitimate defence needs and said New Delhi's buildup of advanced weapons would negatively impact strategic stability in South Asia and beyond.
Foreign Office (FO) spokesman Mohammad Faisal said there was a clear disconnect between India's declared policy of restraint and its relentless pursuit of an ambitious missile programme.

He alleged that the development of Agni V intercontinental ballistic missile showed India's real designs of pursuing hegemony. He termed it an "exercise in power projection".

"While every state has a right to its security, the buildup of sophisticated and advanced weapons and delivery systems by India far exceeds its legitimate defence needs," he said.

"Seen in the backdrop of other acquisitions of advanced capabilities in both the conventional and non-conventional domains, these developments will negatively impact strategic stability in the South Asian region and beyond," he said.

Faisal said Pakistan will continue to adhere to a policy of restraint and a responsible defence posture but will also take steps to ensure its defence.

Faisal said Pakistan believed in a peaceful neighbourhood, which is essential for peace and development. He said that cooperation instead of conflict was the only way forward but it should be reciprocated by actions and not words.

To a question about sharing of test reports of the shoes of Indian prisoner Kulbhushan Jadhav's wife, he said "the report will be shared at an appropriate time."

Jadhav, 47, was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court on charges of espionage and terrorism in April.

India had hit out at Pakistan for the way it treated the wife and mother of Jadhav when they met him in Pakistan on December 25.

He also accused India of launching a malicious propaganda campaign against the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC

The whole statement lacks meaning. Who defines legitimate defence needs ?
Its something that's defined by a country for itself.

. .
Who is Pakistan to decide India's defense needs? Our needs is based on how much we can spend relative to our GDP and our own assessment of threat level in our hostile neighborhood. Stop whining please.
But is it not your entire establishment which starts to cry crocodile tears when Pak gets just 8 ... 8 f-16s!. Well, it is time enough for Pak to also beat drums loudly for serious expansion of military power on the otherside.

Furthermore, in either case this level of weaponisation is just not justified given the challenges of population in terms of mass endemic poverty.

If poverty could be eradicated with just money, India and the rest of the world would be filled with only biryani eaters and beer drinkers. There is much more than money involved if a country wishes to be developed. I would also love to see your analysis on how much India spends Vs its GDP.

There's nothing special about India's buildup. Our defence budget is less than 2% of our GDP. What you see is a below normal pace of development. The govt is actually being criticized for the slow buildup.

As for the whining about CPEC, Pak should first sit and resolve the dispute over the future of the Northern Areas with India before inviting a third country in.

bharat is top importer of arms.. Nothing wrong in statement, Pakistan should highlight this fact again and again...

Nobody has stopped you from buying F-16s. Go right ahead.

Well, it is time enough for Pak to also beat drums loudly for serious expansion of military power on the otherside.

Yes. Please initiate an arms race with India. We will welcome it. Us forum walas will have cool new stuff to talk about.

Don't worry about our economic development. We spend only 3% of our GDP on internal and external security, the rest is spent on the economy. Most of the defence budget goes into employment and salaries, which in turn goes into the economy as well. So the actual defence expenditure is less than 1%.

Our policy makers don't really talk about Pakistan's economy, so you shouldn't have a problem either.

Faisal's boss is the foreign minister, the guy who claimed - uniquely among other nuclear-armed countries - that Pakistan possesses nuclear weapons to suppress domestic revolts: link. Of course this FM is going to have a different idea of "legitimacy" than other folks.

Its interesting to note that Agni 5 missile is specific to China and Chinese themselves officially have made no statement against this

But oddly Pakistanis are protesting against it.

I guess Peiping has begun outsourcing diplomatic protests and warnings considered too foolish and self deprecating even by their own standards to Pindi :)

Well anyone can issue statements. Like your continuous rants about CPEC which aren't going to change anything.

Protest about CARTOSAT launch was hillarious too.

Protest like these would have had an effect on India in 1990s

But post 9/11 , its empty rhetoric by Pakistan for domestic audience , because it justifies Pak army's existence for Indian bogeyman despite history spectacular disasters by the Pak military like 1971 and current domestic insurgency and radicalization of public.

"You guys are escalating things" - from the guys with a nuclear first use policy
