ISLAMABAD: A council of tribal elders in northwest Pakistan has banned cellular phones with cameras after a local resident was allegedly killed for having a girl's photograph on his mobile.
The council or 'jirga' of the Madakhel tribe, which met in Torghar district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province yesterday, issued a decree which said that use of the camera was already prohibited in the area, so use of cellular phone having camera was also banned in the territorial limits of the tribe.
"Anyone, who defies or violates the jirga's decree, will be punished by confiscating his phone set and imposing a fine of Rs 10,000 on him," the decree stated.
The jirga, which was chaired by Maulana Ihsanullah, was convened to discuss the murder of Mohammad Yasin, a local resident who was killed last week allegedly for having the picture of a girl on his mobile phone.
Yasin fled to the southern port city of Karachi last year when he was caught by tribesmen with the picture in his phone.
He was killed when he returned to the area to get a job in the police department, the Dawn newspaper reported.
The jirga told tribesmen that if the violation of the ban on cellular phones with cameras was "serious", the land of the violator too would be confiscated in accordance with tribal traditions.
Jirgas in different parts of Pakistan wield tremendous powers over tribes and people often turn to them to settle disputes.
