ISLAMABAD: Dispelling the foreign pressure over Pak-Iran Gas Pipeline Project, Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr Asim Hussain on Thursday informed the Senate that work has been expedited on the project and said that it would be completed by end of 2013, before the scheduled time.

Replying to various supplementary questions during Question Hour session, he said that feasibility of the project was being prepared and tenders for compressors and pipes would be floated in a month.

The estimated cost of the project is $1.5 billion, however, it will be confirmed after completion of bankable feasibility study.

He said the pipeline would be laid along the coastal highway and two compressor stations would also be set up. Electricity and gas would be provided to the areas nearest to the pipeline, he added.

To another question, the minister said that talks were also being carried out with Turkmenistan for gas supply and an agreement would be inked on November 15 in this regard.

He said that petroleum policy 2011 would be announced shortly in which more incentives were proposed to both local and foreign investors for setting up oil refineries and oil and gas exploration.

The minister said that there are 169 natural gas reservoirs in the country. He said that much bigger gas reservoir than Sui has been discovered at Zinc Block in Balochsitan.

Dr Asim said that currently 24,267 barrel of oil per day was being produced from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa while 11 exploration licences were granted for exploration of oil and gas in the province.

So who offered the loan, and on what terms? When is the contract going to be signed? Is there a target shovel-into-the-ground date?

The banks are Pakistani banks who have formed a consortium to offer the loan.

Pak-Iran gas pipeline project: Balochistan agrees to give land

The government of Balochistan has agreed to give land for Pak-Iran Gas Pipeline project.

Official sources said on Tuesday that Federal Secretary Petroleum Ejaz Chaudhry called on Chief Minister Balochistan Nawab Aslam Raisani.

The CM Balochistan told him that his government agreed to allocate land in Gwadar and Lasbella districts for lying of Pak-Iran Gas Pipeline through Balochistan.

The Pak-Iran Gas Pipeline will cater need of natural gas of the areas where it would pass besides creating chances to install new gas-run power plants in the province.

He, however, demanded to give contract of the work in Balochistan to local contractors in order to boost indigenous economy and generate employment opportunities.

He emphasised the need to strengthen relations with the neighbouring country Iran as saying other countries of the region would take benefit if Pakistan did not improve its ties with Iran.

During the meeting, the two decided that Gwadar Inter-Estate Gas Company Limited would register the contractors in this regard while Gwadar Industrial area would also be provided natural gas from Pak-Iran gas pipeline.

i am waiting for cheap gas up here in Gilgit-Baltistan....speed it up.

It must be very cold there in this time of the year. I wish we can also hurry up with the TAPI project and also tap the gas reserves in Pakistan for the people of Pakistan, everywhere in Pakistan.

you are right and regarding cold....yes.. snow falls are just around the corner.

And do not forget Chitral and many other areas in Pakistan which get very very cold with snow falls but they do not have gas. In case of Chitral, their only option is burning wood. So is the case with areas around Murree etc.

Pakistan has a high rate of lung cancer and respiratory problems such as COPD because of the use of solid fuels such as wood and biomass in domestic setting as per WHO. It is very sad that only a gas pipeline to every house can save the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.

The area surrounding Chitral and in FATA, K-P, and Balochistan are believed to have large reserves of gas that remains untapped, so I've heard and read.
