Pak committed to strengthening trade interaction with Bangladesh: President

President Asif Ali Zardari Monday said Pakistan greatly values its relations with Bangladesh; based on mutual respect, common religion, history and culture.

"Our nations share the same aspirations and hopes, and it is our sincere desire to build on these relations and to give a fresh impetus to them," he said during his talks with Bangladesh Prime Minister Hasina Wajid on the sideline of the world energy summit on Monday.

Spokesman to the President Farhatullah Babar told newsmen that the two sides showed their strong desire further cementing their bilateral ties in all sphere of common interest.

President Zardari emphasized that through continued cooperation, the two countries could work together to harness the challenges for the mutual benefit of their peoples.

President Asif Ali Zardari also appreciated the flood relief assistance pledged by Bangladesh.

The President said the government has taken initiative for providing support of up to Rs 100,000 per affected family through citizens' damage compensation program which has been launched through a transparent Watan card mechanism.

Appreciating role of Bangladesh in finalization of the SAARC Charter of Democracy at the Inter-governmental meeting in Dhaka in September 2010, President Zardari said that the peoples of Pakistan and Bangladesh have regained their democratic rights after a relentless struggle and many sacrifices.

He said the people of Pakistan had democratic ethos and that was why dictatorship had not taken roots in the country.

He said Pakistan is committed to strengthening economic and trade interaction with Bangladesh. He also sought Bangladesh's continued support for the proposed EU waiver of tariffs for a list of Pakistani goods at the WTO.

In her response, Prime Minister of Bangladesh Ms Hasina Wajid underscored the importance of democracies in South Asia and also strengthening of bilateral political, diplomatic and economic relations between the two brotherly countries.

She appreciated President Asif Zardari for his consistent efforts in strengthening bonds of friendship and promoting strong economic partnership among the South Asian countries.
