Pak Army Major arrested over alleged links with Shahzad

Pakistani security agencies have reportedly arrested an Army major, who is said to have had contacts with Faisal Shahzad, the US civilian of Pakistan origin accused of plotting the botched Times Square bombing.

It is for the first time that a Pakistan Army official has been linked directly in the failed bombing plot, however, authorities are mum on the major’s links with Shahzad.

Sources privy to the arrest said that the military official had met Shahzad and that both had frequent chats over the cellphone also, The Los Angeles Times reports.

Meanwhile, US and Pakistani agencies continue to investigate Shahzad’s terror trail, and the truth behind his claims that he had met the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistani (TTP) chieftain Hakimullah Mehsud during one of his many visits to the extremist stronghold North Waziristan.

Shahzad, who appeared in a court in New York on Tuesday, has told U.S. investigators that he had gone to North Waziristan, where he met with Taliban leaders and got training in bombmaking.

According to Pakistani and US officials briefed about the investigations, Shahzad had likely visited Mohmand, a lawless tribal region along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border which is considered as the hub of the Taliban and other extremist outfits.

(RTTNews) - Pakistani security agencies have reportedly arrested an Army Major, who is said to have had contacts with Faisal Shahzad, the Pakistan-born American national, accused of plotting the botched Times Square bombing.

The reported arrest came a day after Shahzad appeared in a federal court in Manhattan, New York, for the first time since his arrest on May 1 over his failed attempt to detonate an SUV loaded with propane tanks and fertilizer in Times Square.

It also came as U.S. National Security Adviser James L. Jones and CIA Director Leon E. Panetta arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday to nudge Pakistan to do more to contain terror emanating from its soil in the wake of the attempted Times Square bomb plot.

Pakistani authorities have not gone public over the arrest of the Major or his links with the Times Square bomb plotter. It is for the first time that a Pakistan Army official has been linked directly in the failed bombing plot.

According to a 'Los Angeles Times' report, the military official had met Shahzad in the Pakistani capital Islamabad and both had frequent chats over the cellphone.

Shahzad, 30, was arraigned before a federal magistrate in Manhattan on Tuesday evening on five felony counts. He did not speak much during his arraignment proceedings that lasted about 15 minutes. He said "yes" when asked to confirm the accuracy of a financial statement.

Prosecutors say he has waived his right to be charged soon after arrest, usually within 48 hours, and to be brought before a judge. He had been held in undisclosed locations since he was nabbed at the John F Kennedy airport while trying to escape to Pakistan via Dubai on an Emirates flight.

Meanwhile, U.S. and Pakistani agencies continue to investigate Shahzad's terror trail, and the truth behind his claims that he had met the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistani (TTP) chieftain Hakimullah Mehsud during one of his many visits to the extremist stronghold of North Waziristan and got training in bomb-making.

According to Pakistani and U.S. officials briefed about the investigation, Shahzad had likely visited Mohmand, a lawless tribal region along the Pakistan-Afghan border which is considered as the hub of Taliban and other extremist outfits.
