Nation sick of imported tacticians: Nawaz
LAHORE: PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has termed the long march a conspiracy against democracy and said that the nation was sick of imported tacticians.
PML-N bigwigs held a meeting on Wednesday to evolve a strategy on the long march called by Dr Tahirul Qadri, Chairman Tehrik-e-Minhajul Quran for January 14. The PML-N has decided to give a free hand to the participants of the long march provided that they do not disrupt the law and order situation.
Nawaz Sharif demanded of the federal government to announce the election schedule without any delay, keeping in view the prevailing political scenario.
He claimed that it was for the first time in the national history that the people of Pakistan were about to achieve their basic right of changing the government through the ballot.
He claimed that they would not allow anyone to get this process delayed on the pretext of accountability and election reforms. He claimed that the elections were just a few weeks ahead and the attempt to sabotage this process through a long march would be tantamount to supporting the agenda of anti-democratic forces and had nothing to do with reforms. He expressed the hope that the people would play their role in accordance with the law and the Constitution.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, PML-N Additional Secretary General Ahsan Iqbal claimed that the meeting had reviewed prevailing political scenario in the wake of Qadri’s call for the long march.
While referring to Nawaz Sharif, he claimed that the PML-N head during the meeting stated that the cronies of former dictator Gen Pervez Musharraf were active to overturn the democratic process but they would not let them succeed in their evil designs.
Those who attended the meeting included Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Senator Pervez Rashid, Ch Jaafar Iqbal, Ahsan Iqbal, Iqbal Zafar Jhagra and Kh Saad Rafiq. Sources said Qadri’s long march and various aspects of a party manifesto also came under discussion at the meeting.
Also speaking to the media after the meeting, Saad Rafiq said the march would not be stopped. However, he said it requires a deep consideration as to whose agenda Mr Qadri was bringing to Pakistan. Nobody would be allowed to derail the democratic system, he said, adding the nation does not need ‘imported politicians’.
INP adds: Meanwhile, Nawaz Sharif said that opposition parties would also be contacted to defeat conspiracies and ensure holding of elections on schedule.
He said the government would be contacted through the leader of the opposition for the formation of a caretaker set-up at the Centre for elections.
Sources said that both Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif made it clear that the party would not agree to any delay in the elections and resist any such move.
They expressed confidence that in the presence of an independent judiciary and Election Commission, those conspiring against elections would not succeed in their agenda. They said that those raising the slogans of ‘change’ and ‘reforms’ needed their own reform.
Nawaz said Pakistan does not need imported politicians and the nation is sick and tired of political gimmicks.
Meanwhile, PML-N secretary general Iqbal Zafar Jhagra said that the agenda of Dr Tahirul Qadri was to delay the elections which is a conspiracy against the country and his party. He said the party was keenly observing the situation from all angles and taking all the opposition parties on board through a dialogue to save democracy. He warned that if elections were delayed, it would be a great tragedy for the country.
