Mig-19s were inferior to Soviet/Afghan Migs, PAF never wanted to put them in such combat...however they found them selves in some close encounters, but no confirmed kill was reported. F-6 operators - No.11 and 14 Sqn responded to some cross border violations even before getting F-16s. But the ROEs from 1979-1986 were different....PAF fighters were not allowed to shoot down any enemy, in fact in one incident F-6s even escorted a Soviet/Afghan transport aircraft back to their borders...

In late 1985, the war became very intense. Border violations and bombing of Soviet/Afghan fighters inside Pakistani territory increased too. Finally Pakistani Govt decided to give 'shoot-to-kill' license to PAF...but it was under certain parameters only...

F-6s did not received any kills during the war. After 1984, most of the ADA missions along the western border were flown by 9 and 14 Sqn.

what made this aircraft lethal was the provision of the sidewinder aam and the 23mm cannon. it held its own against many superior IAF a/c in the 71 war.

no not true. the TOE's were such that the PAF ensured that the dog-fights took place in pak airspace and the a/c which were shot down, the wrecks would fall in pak territory. they were not successful all the time but most of the time.
