NAMEWEE, the controversial Malaysian rapper, has once again managed to rile up netizens, this time though mainly from China, China Press reported.
Namewee’s latest song Beyond the Edge, a tribute to legendary Hong Kong rock band Beyond, was heavily criticised by Chinese Internet users for being perceived to be supporting Hong Kong independence.
The music video, which was uploaded on YouTube on Saturday, featured scenes of protesters running away from tear gas, believed to be taken during one of the rallies calling for democratic reforms last year.
Its opening scene depicted a blue sky with the caption, “This was the last of our expansive skies.”
The rapper seemed to be using the sky as a metaphor for freedom.
Having garnered more than 330,000 views in just three days, comments posted on the channel were highly critical.
“Hong Kong and Taiwan are part of China. Anyone opposing us is our enemy!” one commenter wrote.
Others resorted to calling him names such as “Malaysian monkey”. However, some Malaysian fans defended the rapper, saying that the song was a “true embodiment of Beyond’s values”.
“Despite gaining popularity, Namewee has never sold out and become a bootlicker, ” a fan wrote online.
Namewee, 36, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, originates from Muar, Johor.
Apart from a tumultuous yet successful career in music, he is also a filmmaker, having directed and starred in 2010’s Nasi Lemak 2.0.
The above articles are compiled from the vernacular newspapers (Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese and Tamil dailies). As such, stories are grouped according to the respective language/medium. Where a paragraph begins with a >, it denotes a separate news item.
