Over 100 injured in Shopian clashes; DC office set ablaze
Reports and witnesses said that massive clashes erupted after forces tried to foil the rally called by people in Pinjura village
t least 100 persons were injured in clashes after government forces fired teargas shells to foil a pro-freedom rally in Shopian district in south Kashmir on Sunday.
12 injured have been referred to Srinagar from District Hospital Shopian for specialised treatment.
Reports and witnesses said that massive clashes erupted after forces tried to foil the rally called by people in Pinjura village.
Following the clashes, announcements were made from the public address systems of the mosques in several villages, urging people to stage protests.
This triggered clashes in Shopian town.
Witnesses said that the locals had been preparing for the rally for past many days. "It was happening in a disciplined way. But police had made it a point to foil the rally, come what may," said a local, who didn't want to be named.
Despite the alleged police threats to disrupt the rally, the youths had spent the night at the venue, he said.
While the clashes were going on, the protesters set ablaze the newly-inauguarted building of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Shopian.
No employee was present in the building when it was attacked, reports said.
