KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday said opponents of reconciliation should listen that those who opposed us yesterday will be our allies today.
He formally conveyed to the PPP Sindh leadership that it was almost agreed with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) to contest the election jointly in Karachi, Hyderabad and other parts of the province.
Sources disclosed to this correspondent that the decision was conveyed to the PPP leaders in a meeting of the PPP Core Committee held at the Chief Ministers House here on Friday.Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Pir Mazharul Haq, Agha Siraj Durrani, Murad Ali Shah, Rafiq Engineer and others attended the meeting and briefed the president on the political situation in the province.
The president informed the Sindh leadership that the PPP will contest only on three National Assembly and six provincial assembly seats in Karachi, while no candidates would be fielded against the rest of seats bagged by the MQM in the last elections.
It was also conveyed that the formula, reached with the MQM leadership after detailed discussions, would also apply to Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas and other areas where the MQM was elected.
As for the ANP, it would be offered two provincial assembly seats in Karachi that it had won in the 2008 election. The same formula would apply on the ANP if it agreed, sources claimed.
Insiders said President Zardari further informed the PPP Sindh leadership that the PPP, MQM and ANP would remain as partners in the next setup. He told them that the PPP coalition government owed its five-year term to its policy of reconciliation. He said the credit went to all coalition partners who kept the coalition united despite efforts by the opponents to drive a wedge among them.
Appreciating the role of the MQM leader Altaf Hussain and ANP chief Asfandyar Wali, President Zardari said democracy was strengthened due to their commitment to democracy.
Sources said it was also conveyed to the PPP leaders that the same formula would apply on the election for the Senate seats and both MQM and PPP would retain their seats in the next election.
The PPP leaders also appreciated the role of the coalition partners and were of the opinion that without their cooperation the government would not have been able to complete the five-year constitutional term.
The future political scenario also came under discussion. Sources said President Zardari also directed the party leaders to remain in close contact with the MQM and ANP and take them into confidence on all decisions and policy making as well as the future election campaign.
The PPP has three National Assembly seats and six provincial assembly seats in Karachi and is agreed to continue on these seats, insiders said, adding that the party would also support the coalition partners in the coming election to avoid any confrontation.
Sources said both the PPP and MQM were engaged in the last couple of years to finalize this formula and the leaderships on both sides gave their assent last month.
Our opponents will soon be our allies, says Zardari - thenews.com.pk
