Open more border points for India-Pakistan trade: India-Pakistan Joint Business Forum
AMRITSAR: The India-Pakistan Joint Business Forum has urged the two governments to open more border points for trade and chalk out plans for a common market for Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka to help remove trade bottlenecks.
Talking to TOI on their way back to Pakistan, co-chairman of the forum, Syed Yawar Ali, said that during a meeting with their Indian counterparts on October 10 and 11 in New Delhi, they had discussed possibilities of increasing the trade between the two countries that could help people of both nations.
"We have suggested opening of more border points for trade, doing away with customs duties, simplifying visa regime, etc.," he said. He said he was pained to see people in India buying onions for Rs 60 a kg whereas the vegetable was being sold at Rs 15 a kg in Pakistan.
"There are various crops, including onions, whose seasons compliment in both the countries. We could have supplied onions to India without creating any vacuum in domestic market and that would have benefited both the nations," he said.
Ali said that the forum had selected 10 business sectors to focus on various trades between India and Pakistan. "One of our suggestions to Pakistan government is to give most favoured nation status to India," he added.
Vice-chairman of the forum, Bashir Ali Mohammad, who is also chairman of a Karachi-based textile company, said, "Governments of both the countries have to overcome various trade barriers like inspections, burgeoning duties, etc". There should be a single market for Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal, he said.
